Very informative

I've read many vastu and feng shui books. Usually they are more confusing than educational. This was not.
It showed me that this system is adaptable, and easily understood.
The only negative is the author is not a native English speaker, an editor was needed. And an index of the words that aren't English would have helped enormously.

This is a remarkably readable book for young people ready to enter college. The advice is concise, but often presented in a humorous fashion. Because it isn't a wordy tome, the book invites readers to read just a little bit more, and the topics covered are important for consideration.

The fresh advice covers topics today's high school students probably haven't though about, and it may surprise them to learn that there are often a variety of ways to address a problem.

The format invites scanning, and that approach will provide insight into issues that weren't encountered at home or in local schools. All the rumors about the freshman fifteen, roommate problems, teachers' expectations, being home sick, making new friends are covered. The advice is to the point and worthy of consideration.

Take the title literally...

I have a high school senior and thought this would be a perfect stocking stuffer. I read the reviews and thought perfect, yes, he needs this now! I must say I was somewhat disappointed. Yes, it is small. Very similar to those small desktop daily word or motivational calendars. That's not the problem, the issue is the book binding...you're hesitant to open the book entirely for fear of tearing it at the seam. Next is the presentation of the information. It is literally, 1001 things that the author feels every college student needs to know. There are no details, explanations, or relating stories. Just bottom line statements/pointers you should know. Some of the things are what you'd believe to be common sense...but they really aren't, not to teenagers entering college anyway. And it is for this reason I'd recommend it for students entering or in their junior year of high school. It's helpful, but just not what I was looking for.

It had many good tips about every topic. It helped me learn how to stay focused on my goal, which, of course, is graduating on time. I really recommend this!

Somewhat of a mess in places

I do not have any other pharmacology texts to compare this to, but I find the thing to be most annoying with this text is that the authors will throw in a medical term or reference a disease, but not bother to explain what they mean. This is a frequent occurrence! This means you can either stop what you're reading to go look it up, or let it slide through your brain and hope that it wasn't very important. My most recent run in with this is the statement that vaccines are contraindicated in patients with diarrhea, vomiting, otitis... WTF is otitis???? Also, there seems to be unnecessary use of the apothecary system, which according to several people I know in the health care field (doctors, and nurses), is NEVER used these days. Why teach some outdated system? Next we'll have to learn to use a slide rule and an abacus. Geez!

Another reviewer mentioned that the online quizzes were horrible and full of errors. I do not have access to any sort of online supplement to this book, but I now suspect that my professor gets his test questions from there. Almost every single chapter quiz we've had so far has contained some question that is either flat-out wrong, or else worded in such an obscure and garbled way that you have no idea what answer they're looking for. I have fought for these lost points, and my professor has given me credit in almost every instance. This subject is not that hard, but it has quickly become my most hated class, and I'm also taking chemistry, physics, and nutrition.

Conclusion: Unless you have to purchase this book for a class, avoid it at all costs.

Sean D'Souza has always flown under the radar

It seems like everybody's got the "one true answer" for growing your business. And its so frustrating when you try and implement someone's advice. Either it doesn't apply, or it's too vague, or it's too specific!

That's why I was blown away by The Brain Audit. From the first page it grabs you with its simple and intuitive approach to understanding your potential client's thought process as they look through your sales materials, or walk through your website, or pick up your business card or postcard or maybe watch your commercial.

You put this book down and you think, my god, is that all there is to it? And you start to look at your website and you think, "whoa, there's way more to this than meets the eye". And all of a sudden you realize your web designer doesn't know how to attract customers. And your video producer hasn't got a clue about what makes customers give you trust. And a calm settles over you as you realize you can do this and you can help your designer and producer give you what you need in a very simple and elegant way.

Anyway, that's what happened to me. I quickly developed a way of monitoring all my communications so that they're just what my potential clients need to know to make the right decision. I don't worry about websites anymore. Or commercials. Or postcards.

The other thing I like about the book is that there's nothing sneaky in it. It's all completely above-board. The only thing that takes you off-guard is D'Souza's style. He writes with such a light, breezy touch, with such great good humor, the words barely stay on the page.

Bottom line for me is that The Brain Audit works. It works pretty darn well. But this also makes me a little sad. Sean D'Souza has always flown under the radar. I fear I may lose him as a secret weapon now. So I would say pick up this book and get your secret weapon while you still can.

A voice from the other side

How to get your stuff read: stand out from the crowd. In a mass of five-star reviews, write something other. I got this lesson from Brain Audit, at least indirectly.

All the five-star reviews are true, actually, and this book is the subject of a review-building campaign, and I know a lot of the people who've written these reviews, and they're telling their truth, even if they're not in the business of writing reviews regularly.

The downside: the book's expensive. The author is a master of testing prices. This is the lowest I've seen it--think I paid around $150 or thereabouts for an e-copy, and then another $30 to have that file printed. I think I have audio files to accompany the digital copy.

Here's the rub: Read the five stars. Imagine all those promises coming true in your life. Then, imagine all the work you will have to do to implement all those promises--all the web copy you'll have to change or write, all the elevator speeches you'll have to practice, all the sales pitches you'll need to adjust. Think through how you will get that work done.

IF you know you will actually DO the work and make the changes, buy the book (or perhaps even better, go to the website and get the entire package), read/listen, implement, and go. The price is cheap. If, however, you are more of a read-and-dream, read-and-imagine, read-and-know-you-should-but-actually-won't-take-action, take your honey to dinner instead. The book alone won't make the changes for you, however clearly it makes the case for thinking differently about marketing.
