High interest book for ESL

Can You Believe It 2, one of a three-part series, is a high-interest book based on true stories that are summarized using a number of idioms per chapter. The chapters are very short, beginning with a paragraph-length reading, a chart defining the idioms used,picture cues to help the student retell the story in his/her own words. questions about the story, personal questions cued with the idioms, a dictation section, and a summary exercise that requires students to put some of the idioms in context in the blanks. It also has some very helpful appendices and an alphabetical list of the book's idioms at the end of the book. (No answer key)

I like the book because it is high-interest and teaches idioms in an effective way. The review units are a great way of recycling material and give students more exposure. I have been using this book for over ten years.

That being said, the series needs an update, which is why I didn't give it five stars. More exercises could be added to the chapters to give them a little more substance, and some of the idioms are out of common use ("fit as a fiddle," "dead as a door nail," ) Since the chapters are quite brief, I usually expand on the questions or use the lessons as part of a longer lesson.

The book also offers cassettes, but teachers can use this book without those dinosaurs.....

Excellent, Interesting ESL Resource

In tutoring middle- and high-school students from Korea, this workbook is the best I've found for studying English idioms and expressions. Each lesson's true, amazing short story presents new idioms in context, then an eight-panel comic strip illustrates the story. Discussion questions about the story, a summary dictation, and review exercises work together to guarantee that each idiom is read, heard, written, and spoken by my students.

I only wish I could find Book 1, because books 2 and 3 are so good!

A must read for anyone wanting to achieve financial freedom

Pete Wargent's "Get a Financial Grip" is one of those books I wished I'd read 10 years ago. Granted, I'm only 28 now, but the information and steps outlined in the book is so simple and easy to understand that at 18 I'm sure I could have comprehended it and put it to good use!

It is refreshing to read a book that outlines the exact strategy that the Author undertook to achieve financial freedom at 33. There's no gimmicks or implication of purchasing other products, it just gives good old fashioned advice, which if implemented will help the reader achieve success over time.

Thanks Pete for writing a financial book based on Aussie laws but with financial principles applicable for everyone. Sound advice which is not way out there and certainly not a get rich quick scheme. highly recommend it.

About the Author
Dr. Suarez served with distinction for over 11 years in the White House during the Clinton and Bush administrations. He was selected to lead the first Presidential Quality office in the institution’s history. Suarez led efforts to introduce systems thinking and organizational redesign into the White House Communications Agency, the White House Military Office and the Management and Administration of the Executive Office of the President of the United States. He also served as Director of Customer Support and Organizational Development for the White House Military Office. Suarez traveled aboard Air Force One and Presidential helicopters in numerous missions worldwide. He received many Presidential awards and commendations for his work including the White House Distinguished Service Award and the Commander-in-Chief coin. He is an internationally recognized authority on leadership, systems thinking and design, strategy formulation, innovation, and management of fear in the workplace. Through his career he collaborated with Dr. W. Edwards Deming, Dr. Russell L. Ackoff, and Stephen R. Covey. Suarez is an award-winning faculty at the University of Maryland in College Park where he holds the rank of Professor of the Practice in Systems Thinking and Design. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Faculty member in the Honors College. In his leadership roles at the Smith School of Business he served as Associate Dean of External Strategy, Executive Director of the multidisciplinary Quality Enhancement Systems and Teams Honors program, Fellow of the Center for Innovation Leadership and Change as well as Executive Education Senior Fellow. He teaches at the corporate, executive MBA, international and undergraduate programs. Dr. Suarez coaches executive leaders and is a leading adviser to government agencies and Fortune 500 companies. He lectures extensively throughout South America, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and North America.

Read it and Act Upon It

This book stands with Tim Kelley's True Purpose, Elisabeth Lesser's Broken Open and Brene Brown's Daring Greatly as a must-read for anyone who seeks to know themselves better and make the most of their own life, Gerald Suarez is a great communicator. The book benefits from clear structure, simple but compelling language, and bite-sized suggestions for moving ourselves right along. Unlike many books that concentrate on self-actualization, the rigor of the thinking is clear, and the tone eminently practical: Dr. Suarez uses his expertise in systems thinking to give us lenses to see our own life landscapes. He then gives us questions to identify our own desires and dreams and to design a measurable plan to create our own future. Although the book is crisp and based on deep social science knowledge there is heart and imagination in every line. Dr. Suarez urges us not to be human pinata, swinging wildly as a result of the action and intent of others, but instead to learn to lead ourselves to our ideal futures. Read it and act upon it.

The Contemplation, Desire, Design and Creation cycle is an excellent tool to use when designing an organization's future and helping its individuals connect more closely with their professional -- and personal -- purpose. Excellent, excellent job of simplifying the complexities of quality systems and showing how they can be appropriately applied to nearly everything that we do.

This is definitely not for kids. It is a compendium of more or less pornagraphic tales that develops into a more realistic soap opera in volume 2. Well written and visually presented in style similar to Stan Sakai or Carl Barks.

The Most Overrated Comic Series In History

I am aware that this comic series is critically acclaimed. Why? Compared to other adults-only comic, most of which are poorly-drawn garbage with no storyline, Omaha looks good. But on its own, it's not so great after all.

What is Omaha The Cat Dancer, anyway? It's a comic series whose characters are talking animals who behave and dress like humans and go barefoot. Yes, it's a very common trope, but inherently ridiculous all the same. Which is why funny animal comics have humor in them. But Omaha The Cat Dancer is almost entirely devoid of jokes and humor. It's not failed comedy; it plays itself completely straight, despite its inherently silly and non-realistic format.

Okay, the characters are really just humans with a few "animal" characteristics such as snouts and tails tacked on. Even that might be forgiven if Omaha were intended to be its own fantasy world with no relationship to the human one. But clearly the comic is a didactic "message" one that tells us that being a striptease dancer is nothing to be ashamed of, and that pornography is pro-woman and feminist.

And that is the worst part of the comic. Can you essentially be a whore who plays to mens' base instincts and still be a true feminist? Omaha The Cat Dancer tries to make the case, but it fails, as anyone who hasn't lived a sheltered life can see. For instance, the story has Omaha having a romances with people who watch her perform. In real life, striptease dancers who talk about their careers invariably say that they view those who watch them as clients for whom they fulfill fantasies, and never as people they would want to have real relationships with. Also, the pleasures of sex are depicted-but never their consequences. Pregnancy and venereal disease are as nonexistent as shoes in the comic. Um, real animals may be able to live without shoes, but they do get pregnancy and disease. But Omaha completely disregards this fact.

On top of all that, however, people who are contemptuous of striptease and pornography are depicted either as weaklings or hypocrites. The anti-pornography crusaders are invariably hypocrites who use women for themselves. What would Omaha have to say about anti-pornography crusaders who aren't rank hypocrites? Nothing, I suspect. For the record, I've known women who despise pornography but were hardly asexual prigs, and women who would pose for artistic nudity but who would do nothing outright pornographic.

The drawings are good and animated when such is called for. Come for the porn, stay for the porn, but don't expect anything else.

Excellent Capstone Book

This book is an excellent description of all the elements that would go into reviewing a potential investment opportunity. It is not a detailed book in one category, such as financial accounting, but it ties business strategy analysis, financial analysis, forecasting analysis, and valuation analysis together. Most other books focus on one area and don't tie all of these together well. This one takes you down the path to evaluating the opportunity to its fullest. It is an excellent capstone book after you have sifted through the details of strategy, finance, and accounting.
