A Deeper Blue: The Life and Music of Townes Van Zandt (North Texas Lives of Musician Series), by Robert Earl Hardy

This is the first serious biography of a man widely considered one of Texas’—and America’s—greatest songwriters. Like Jimmie Rodgers, Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, and Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt was the embodiment of that mythic American figure, the troubled troubadour. A Deeper Blue traces Van Zandt’s background as the scion of a prominent Texas family; his troubled early years and his transformation from promising pre-law student to wandering folk singer; his life on the road and the demons that pursued and were pursued by him; the women who loved and inspired him; and the brilliance and enduring beauty of his songs, which are explored in depth. The author draws on eight years’ extensive research and interviews with Townes’ family and closest friends and colleagues. He looks beyond the legend and paints a colorful portrait of a complex man who embraced the darkness of demons and myth as well as the light of deep compassion and humanity, all “for the sake of the song.”

Review
"A Deeper Blue ... gives fascinating insight into what inspired this sweet‑singing, tortured genius and what inevitably brought him down. His songs stirred the soul and seemed to well from its darkest depths. He became the patron saint of many a Texas songwriter in his day and will continue to inspire for generations to come. Save a tear for Townes. You'll need it." -- Joe Ely

"Hardy delineates the musician's chaotic life in honest, often dramatic detail, but always brings the attention and focus back to Van Zandt's music and the classic songs he penned.... Steering through the myths and legends, the author depicts a troubled individual and gifted artist who inspired many singers and songwriters in the alternative country scene." -- Billboard

"Hardy's sparkling new biography of the tragic, magic life of Townes Van Zandt is a must‑read for anyone who loves music or likes to raise hell. A Deeper Blue demonstrates why Van Zandt has become Texas' version of Mozart, Van Gogh, and Hank Williams all rolled up into one brilliant and beautiful burrito." -- Kinky Friedman

"Honest, unbiased look at the troubled career and existence of one of America's greatest songwriters.... A poignant, clear and vivid portrait." -- Kirkus Reviews

Hardy's book carefully documents many of the facets of this gem of a life. His love for the music shines through, just as the spirit of Townes shines through each song." -- Kathleen Hudson, founder of the Texas Heritage Music Foundation

From the Publisher
"The author talked to many, many people who knew Townes. His work offers a wealth of anecdotes and information." ‑ Louis Black, editor of the Austin Chronicle and executive producer of Be Here To Love Me: A Film About Townes Van Zandt

Read it if you need to, listen because you must...
By J. Williams
I recall the first time I heard Poncho and Lefty and immediately picked up the cover to see who wrote it. Townes Van Zandt. That was the beginning of my appreciation for his talents. The book is probably a must read for many, it was for me and it certainly told me a lot about the man and his life. That said, it went on way too long. One reviewer referred to a slow motion train wreck and maybe that's a good way to put it. Since most of his time was spent drinking and drugging himself to death, the detailed account becomes both morbid and repetitive. A songwriter and troubadour's itinerant life may make for some fine music but sometimes does not make for a prolonged read. Repeating the lyrics along with explanations probably reveals more about the author than the songwriter. That said, the writing is thorough and appears balanced and I read it in one sitting on a long overnight flight to Nairobi. Townes's music stands on its own and reading about him doesn't turn on more lights - that day I first heard Poncho and Lefty was enough...and listening to his tunes still is...although I don't fault the author for the often-sad tale he had to tell. That was the story.

Well written and engaging
By GuitarGus
I read this book with the hope of getting some insight into the personality and songwriting skills of Townes Van Zandt. Many great songwriters praise his work and cite him as inspiration in their own craft. As a songwriter myself, I was seeking to know the qualities he had that made him so good. I thought the author did a great job of balancing his life story with his musical journey. It is my opinion that many times a biographical author will get so caught up in the details (drugs, alcohol, romances, etc.) that the songwriting and music takes a lower level of importance in the story. Hardy seemed to keep it in the forefront even as he masterfully told the life (and death) story of Townes without ignoring the details mentioned. His presentation of the many people (family, friends, wives, children, performers, and fans) and the roles they played in Townes' life was weaved into the story much like in a novel. It is apparent that he had some kind of bi-polar disorder in a time when this was not very well understood. Sometimes I hated Townes as I read, other times I absolutely thought he was the most genuine, giving, and likable person.

There is truly a lot of information on his songs and many lyrics, which was great for me. I found it helpful to go to You Tube when a particular song was talked about in the book. There are many wonderful postings there that gives the listener a good impression of Townes' body of work. Look for the live videos. You can see the gradual degradation in his singing voice and guitar playing as he ages and progresses in his alcoholism. Still, the words of his songs are for the most part... well, truth.

A deeper blue
By Kevin Petersen
This was an excellent book. Exactly what I was looking for in wanting to know more about townes van zandt, his life, what made him tick. It was meticulously researched and it comes thorugh in the writing. There is plenty of insight and anecdotes. I'd elaborate, but instead I'll just say read it if you're interested.

I do have one major gripe with the author. After establishing from the beginning of the book that Townes wanted the meaning of his songs to be interpreted by the listener, that they could mean different things to different people (which is what good poetry should do), Hardy goes on to give these readings of the song that border on pompous. He doesn't say, "this is my view of the song," he says "this is what townes was saying when he wrote it," and nine times out of ten this isn't based on anything. The book was well researched, but rarely did townes ever come out and say, "this is what this line means," so i think it is pretty audacious of the author to presume he is the authority on how to read into his lyrics. The book is still worth reading, but whenever the song interpretations came in I would get very annoyed and sometimes have to skip those sections.

My Father, Daniel Boone: The Draper Interviews with Nathan BooneFrom Brand: The University Press of Kentucky

One of the most famous figures of the American frontier, Daniel Boone clashed with the Shawnee and sought to exploit the riches of a newly settled region. Despite Boone's fame, his life remains wrapped in mystery. The Boone legend, which began with the publication of John Filson's The Adventures of Col. Daniel Boone and continued through modern times with Fess Parker's Daniel Boone television series, has become a hopeless mix of fact and fiction. Born in 1819, archivist Lyman Draper was a tireless collector of oral history and is responsible for much of what we do know about Boone. Particularly interested in frontier history, Draper conducted interviews with the famous and the obscure and collected thousands of manuscripts (he walked hundreds of miles through the South to save historical materials during the Civil War). In an 1851 visit with Boone's youngest son, Nathan, and Nathan's wife, Olive, Draper produced over three hundred pages of notes that became the most important source of information about Daniel. The interviews provide a wealth of accurate, first-hand information about Boone's years in Kentucky, his capture by Indians, his defense of Fort Boonesboro, his lengthy hunting expeditions, and his final years in Missouri. My Father, Daniel Boone is an engaging account of one of America's great pioneers, in which Nathan makes a point of separating fact from fiction. From explaining the methods his father used to track game to detailing how land speculation and legal problems from title claims caused Boone to leave Kentucky and take up residence farther west, Nathan Boone's portrait of his father brings a crucial period in frontier history to life.

From Booklist
Daniel Boone remains one of the most enduring and intriguing American icons. Unfortunately, the man and the myth have become so hopelessly entangled that it is almost impossible to separate legend from reality. In 1851, historian and archivist Lyman Draper spent several weeks visiting Nathan Boone, the only surviving child of Daniel Boone. As a result of this extended interview, Draper amassed more than 300 pages of notes intimately detailing the personal life of one of the American frontier's most memorable characters. Though the Draper interviews have provided numerous Boone biographers with their primary source of material, this is the first time this wealth of information has been organized into book form and made readily accessible to the public. Rather than a larger-than-life caricature, what eventually emerges is an affectionate, down-to-earth, immensely likable American hero. Invaluable oral history. Margaret Flanagan

Nathan and Olive Discuss Father Daniel Boone
By Avi Hathor, M. S., M.F.A.
Nathan Boone and his wife, Olive van Bibber Boone, had the kind of memories most people wish for. They remembered virtually all of the early history of Commonwealth of Kentucky. When Lyman Draper came to visit them for two months in 1851 he found them full of the most interesting and detailed memories of Daniel Boone. Not only had the elder Boone lived with them and shared his own memories, they had also lived through many of the incidents themselves, and knew many of the old pioneers -- old van Bibber was one of the earliest settlers in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Enjoyable, highly readable. I highly recommend this book.

Boone, From Myth to Reality
By James Daniels
The Draper Interviews provide insight into the life of Boone, free of the myth and larger than life stereotype that has always surrounded this remarkable frontiersman. Nathan Boone's recollections of his father also gives us a glimpse of how Daniel himself viewed the world in which he lived and allows us to more clearly understand the man from which the legend sprung. Though many books written from similiar interviews are dull and rather boring, the Draper Interviews are arranged so that they make for rather stimulating reading and keep the reader eagerly in longing for the next chapter. Truly a "must read" for anyone interested in Daniel Boone or early Kentucky history.

Review of My Father, Daniel Boone by Draper
By H. Marshall
I thought it an excellent book which sheds some interesting light on Nathans father, Daniel Boone. Nathan seems to have had a pretty good memory for detail at his age. How I would have loved to been there when Simon Kenton made his last visit to Daniel. Two great frontiersmen in their twilight. Their kind will never be again.. the frontier is gone.

Tragic that Daniel Boone would die penniless due to legalities with land claim issues and some bad business ventures. But his heart was always in the right place, and he kept his honor and dignity to the end. In short, a book worthy of any serious student of American History, or those that want to know about Daniel from the mouth of his son.

Whose side are you on?
By M. Randall
So just whose side are you on? Are you with the strict Iron Man, who seeks for all mutants and superhumans to register with the government. Thus making their identity public. Or are you with the AWOL Captain America, who seeks freedom in his heroism and doesn't think superheroes should have to become "lapdogs" to the government so to speak.

With gorgeous artwork and a GREAT storyline spanning across several Marvel series this year... Civil War is a good reason to become a comic book fan.

Faerie Winter: Book 2 of the Bones of Faerie Trilogy, by Janni Lee Simner

The long-awaited sequel to Janni Lee Simner's breathtaking YA fantasy debut, Bones of Faerie.

Liza is a summoner. She can draw life to herself, even from beyond the grave. And because magic works both ways, she can drive life away. Months ago, she used her powers to banish her dangerous father and to rescue her mother, lost in dreams, from the ruined land of Faerie.

Born in the wake of the war between humanity and Faerie, Liza lived in a world where green things never slept, where trees sought to root in living flesh and bone. But now the forests have fallen silent. Even the evergreens' branches are bare. Winter crops won't grow, and the threat of starvation looms. And deep in the forest a dark, malevolent will is at work. To face it, Liza will have to find within herself something more powerful than magic alone.

Here at last is the sequel to Bones of Faerie, for all those fans of dark fantasy and dystopian adventure who thrilled to Janni Lee Simner's unique vision of a postapocalyptic world infused with magic.

Review
From VOYA:
Fans of dark Faerie stories will find this appealing. Liza is a strong female protagonist, and her story provides not only suspense in terms of the survival of the earth and humans, but also looks at different mother-daughter relationships, the power of promises, and the strength of love. This is a riveting story that should find fans at both junior and high school. Those who read the earlier tale will be eager to find its sequel.

From School Library Journal:
Simner paints a hauntingly exquisite portrait of a postapocalyptic world.  Faerie Winter is a beautifully crafted tale, peopled with believable characters and overflowing with dramatic plot twists. But perhaps the most exceptional quality is the vivid imagery that plunges readers into the story and keeps them enchanted throughout. Fans of both fantasy and dystopian fiction will devour this one.

Chapter 1

Snow crunched beneath my boots as I patrolled the winter forest, a gray wolf by my side.

Low on the horizon, a waxing moon shone through the trees, silvering the bare branches of oak and ash, sycamore and elm. Cold bit through the tips of my leather gloves, and my breath puffed into the still air. An oak branch swung at me, sleepy and slow. The wolf--Matthew--growled a warning, but I ducked out of the way easily enough. The oak sighed, but it didn't try again. The trees were too tired to do much harm this winter.

I walked carefully over a line of fire ants melting a trail through the snow. Nearby I heard the clicking of termites chewing dead wood. Termites were among the few creatures who hadn't gone hungry since the leaves had fallen from the trees.

Beneath a pine that had dropped all its needles, a patch of ice-frosted ferns shivered. Something dark moved among the ferns--Matthew's ears stiffened into alertness. I slowed my steps and rested my hand against his back. We walked forward together.

A shadow hunkered amid the ferns, shapeless and trembling. As I knelt before it, the shadow took on a human shape, arms and legs and face, features smudged and indistinct in the moonlight. A child--in one hand it held out a toy, shaped like a dinosaur from Before--long Before.

I removed my glove and took the child's other hand in my own. Shadow fingers passed right through mine, and cold shivered through me. I reached out with my magic, and that magic was cold, too. Cold bound us one to another, shadow and living, strong as twisted rope. Softly I asked, "What is your name?"

Something deep within the shadow yearned toward me, aching to be called back to life. "Ben." His hoarse voice was at the edge of hearing.

I couldn't call any shadow back to life. "Seek sleep, Ben." I put my magic--my power--into the words. "Seek rest, seek darkness, seek peace."

Icy numbness spread through my fingers. Ben whimpered as he sank into the ferns and the snow. His fingers slipped from mine. "Ethan," he whispered, and then he was gone, leaving behind only a moon-bright whiteness that stung my eyes.

Cold shot through my palm and up my arm. Matthew nudged my other hand, and I remembered the glove I held. I pulled it on. Tingling warmth spread through my fingers, until I could move them once more. "Thanks, Matthew." I pressed my nose to his. Our frosted breaths, human and wolf, mingled in the air.

Matthew made a quiet sound. "Time to go home," I agreed. We turned from the ferns, back toward the path and the chores that waited in town. I scanned the snow and brush around us, but I didn't see any more shadows.

At least it was only human shadows we needed to watch for now. Until this winter, the trees had held shadows of their own, and those shadows had attacked anyone desperate enough to venture out at night. The trees' roots and branches had attacked, too, by day and night both.

But now the trees had dropped their leaves and they slept, and instead human shadows from Before roamed the woods at night, shadows of those who'd died during the War with Faerie. Sometimes those shadows drifted into town, looking for lost loved ones. I still remembered the look on Matthew's grandmother's face when the daughter I hadn't known she'd had appeared at her door. At least she'd let me lay that shadow to rest. Another of our townsfolk had shivered to death when he wouldn't let go of the shadow of his first wife, whom he'd lost during the War. After that, Matthew and I had started doing regular patrols, heading out before dawn a couple of times a week.

We could head out before dawn now that the trees no longer sought human flesh and blood. It had been a welcome change not to fear every rustling leaf.

Matthew stopped and sniffed the air. He turned and trotted off the path, deeper into the forest. I followed. My hand moved to the belt cinched around my oversized coat and the knife that hung sheathed there, a habit from years spent tracking game through more wakeful forests.

Matthew stopped by a mound about the same size he was. He nosed at it, let out a low whine, and began digging. The old snow was unevenly packed, as if it had been shaped by human hands. A faded brown dinosaur sat perched atop it, molded of hard pre-War plastic.

Cold got down beneath my coat and scarf, chilled my toes in their wool socks. I helped Matthew dig, knowing well enough what we would find.

Ben had been young, little more than a toddler, with curls that hung frozen over a face made pale by the moonlight. He hadn't died in the War after all. He'd died no more than a day or two ago, after the last snowfall, and someone had buried him here.

I wanted nothing more to do with dead children. I wanted to flee this place, but we had to know what had happened to him, in case it posed some danger to our town.

Cold stiffened my fingers. The dinosaur toppled into the snow. I kept digging.

Bleak as winter, fresh as spring
By Leah
Author Janni Lee Simner's sequel to the post apocalyptic fantasy Bones of Faerie, FAERIE WINTER is cut from a different cloth than its predecessor. BONES OF FAERIE was more of Liza's, the narrator, coming of age in an America ravaged by magic from a past war between humans and the faerie. She also had to deal with her deepest fear: magic, especially since her overbearing father shunned anyone who was born with any magical potential, including her own sister. But the truth was more than even Liza could have realized. Read BONES first beforehand.

FAERIE WINTER is a story of survival. In this world, plants draw blood, creatures can attack on whim. Liza has magic and has come to terms with it, the ability to compel people and animals with her voice. She uses this ability with her friend Matthew, who can transform into a wolf, to help the lingering dead cross over. But her world is being affected by permanent winter. Crops won't grow; the forest, once a deadly entity, is growing silent. Then a chance encounter with a spirit in the forest brings a stranger to her town, and nothing is the same again. The Lady, a high ranking faerie, is on the attack.

Things kick off right from the first chapter and never lets go. At first you think the story is headed in one direction but then it veers off into another-a literary MacGuffin-which was surprising yet well done. Being a survival story, there is violence, gore, and death, so tread into this one cautiously.

Everything Liza learned from her father pays off in this story. She is definitely not afraid of getting her hands dirty. She constantly feels the need to put herself on the line for others, but remember, here is a girl who has gone through hell and back. She has lost a lot, yet she still gets up every time. The only pet peeve I had was her compulsion was unintentionally funny. There were times when she sounded like an angry mother. Example being: "Tara (her mother), come here!"

Liza's relationship with Matthew was my favorite. In the gray world they grew up in, their bond was strong. They really cared about each other. Her bond with her mother had been strained since the end of BONES OF FAERIE. It wasn't perfect, but Liza's feeling of abandonment was very real. The introduction of kids Kyle-very adorable- and Johnny helped Liza develop into a tougher young woman. But it was her "relationship" with the vengeful Lady that takes center stage. Theirs was a battle of wills, you never knew who was going to win.

I have to tip my hat to Ms. Simner. Her world brimmed with danger and magic. She took two years to present this next chapter in her faerie story, and it was well worth the wait. Don't go near the trees. Don't draw the attention of any of the animals. Dare you enter this wintry forest, better be prepared for what's lurking there.

A gripping sensory story that transports you
By Natasha Reeves
I read Bones of Faerie and fell in love with the world, accepting the fact that there probably wasn't going to be a sequel. In fact, I didn't even expect one. But I was delighted when I saw there was one, forgetting how intense my love was for Bones of Faerie. Faerie Winter matched that adoration and rose above it.

Simner creates a world that is simplistically complicated. It's hard to explain. I felt it was pure, like the essence of, well, a faerie and not cluttered by dirt and other things that I enjoy equally in other fiction. This truly gives me a calm feeling when I read it, even as bad things are happening.

The story is done very well, and isn't a sequel as much as a companion, like the Artemis Fowl books always have a new story in each book but with the characters that tie them together. We get to explore more about the children After, their magic, and their need to be accepted and want to use their gifts to help and not harm. We also meet the cruel fae, the most cruel of the cruel in fact, The Lady herself. She was as beautiful and deadly as dry ice. And yet, as "dark" as everything was, the story never really had a dark or bleak tone. It felt like I was stuck in winter (as I read this with 90 degree weather outside) and I felt sleepy like I do during winter months.

Simner managed to catch the essence of winter in this book and balance it subtly with the knowledge that spring will come, but how easily to forget something when it's gone away for long periods. Do pick it up. Do yourself a favor. It will wow you and have you wanting more. Simner left enough threads where there could be another, but regardless, I am perfectly content with whatever is in store for our beloved characters.

Excellent sequel to Bones Of Faerie
By Victoria Sloboda
Excellent follow up to Bones of Faerie. Liza brought the chia tree seed back from the dark dead world and had it come to life in the human land. But after fall winter occurred and never left. Those from Before kept saying spring would come but after 6 months, it looked a bit grave. Many of those from Before don't trust their own children since all born After have magic and they are afraid of the children. Liza's mom is trying to train the children how to control their magic. But many like Kyle and Johnny's mom pretty much hate their own kids.
While out on soul patrol Liza and Matthew find a burned to death child. As she sends his shadow on it becomes apparent that a firestarter caused his death and Ben (the boy) says the name Ethan as he fades. Liza and Matthew find Ethan and take him back to the village. He has no control over his magic and almost burns down Liza's home. Matthew goes off to get Caleb to come heal Matthew. When Matthew doesn't return by morning Liza goes in search of him. While tracking him she notices another set of prints. They're Kyle's. Johnny sneaks up on Liza and says that Kyle has run away again. She can't get them to head back to the village before they find all these burned to death children.
I won't say anymore. What follows is action packed and a must read.

The Great Heresies, by Hilaire Belloc

Hilaire Belloc examines the five most destructive heretical movements to have affected Christian Civilization: Arianism, Mohammedanism (Islam), Albigensianism (Cathar), The Reformation (Protestant), and “The Modern Phase.” Belloc describes how these movements began, how they spread, and how they continued to influence the world up until the time of his writing (1936). The Chapter on Islam is especially relevant in light of current events; in it Belloc accurately predicts the renewal of Jihadist aggression towards Western Civilization.

Must Read
By Brad Shorr
Belloc has an amazing ability to discern general principles from a complex set of facts. He puts it to good use in analyzing the five major heresies that have thwarted the Catholic Church-all of which are socially, politically, and theologically complicated matters spanning centuries.

Conciseness is another of his writing attributes. In a scant 160 pages, Belloc manages to fully probe Arianism, Islam, Albigensianism, the Reformation, and what he calls the "modern" heresy, which at that time had no name but contains elements of what today we might call scientific determinism, humanism, secular humanism, skepticism, or moral relativism.

I found the discussion of Islam particularly valuable. Prior to reading this, I had no idea how Islam spread so quickly, why so enduringly, and how it differed theologically from Christianity. I was struck by how similar the phenomenon of Islam was to the Reformation: both movements liberated converts from oppressive taxation and other financial obligations; both involved a simplification of doctrine that appealed to the masses; both were a reaction against clericalism. Obviously, the movements differed in that Islam attacked Catholicism from the outside, while the Reformation struck from the inside. In Belloc's view, this existence on the fringe of Western culture explains why Islam has endured culturally and spiritually. Ominously, Belloc closes this chapter by asking whether Islam will rise up once more to challenge the West. Prophetically, he answers, "yes". Islam, he maintains, has the virtue of spiritual solidarity, whereas in the West, religion, the very glue of civilization, is dissolving, leaving us irresolute, aimless and vulnerable. A strong political leader in the Islamic world could harness the strength of this spiritually united people and overwhelm us. Pretty relevant ideas, even though written in the 1930's.

No less impressive is Belloc's overview of the Reformation from before Luther to his present day. He traces the movement as seen through the eyes of those who lived through it-an illuminating technique of which Belloc is a master. He makes any number of important points, but the most crucial, in his view, is this: that the Reformation, by splitting Christendom, diminished the importance of religion to all men. If one religion is as good as another, if no single value system guides the behavior of men, then men will be driven by other things-acquisition of wealth, pleasure, power, what have you. This splitting of Christendom thus paves the way for a new attack-what he calls the Modern Attack-that is wholly anti-religious and seeks nothing less than the utter destruction of faith. We are in the midst of this attack now, and Belloc helps us understand how we got here. Sobering reading indeed

Here the great Catholic historian Hilaire Belloc analyzes 5 of the greatest heresies of all time: Arianism, Mohammedanism (Islam), Albigensianism, Protestantism, and "the Modern Attack," showing that the world would be vastly different today if Arianism or Albigensianism had survived--and how it is different because Protestantism survived. He predicts the re-emergence of Islam; explains how the Modern Attack is the worst threat to the Catholic Church ever. Gives a keen understanding of the direction of history--as we are living it today!

The Great Heresies
By zonaras
_The Great Heresies_ by the notable Catholic historian Hillaire Belloc is an outstanding introduction on what constitutes a "heresy" and the threats they have posed to the unity of Christendom. Belloc introduces his subject by defining what a heresy is. A heresy is a worldview that affirms certain aspects of Catholicism (and "Catholicism" can be understood as "traditional Christianity" in its Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox forms) but denies certain absolutely crucial doctrines of the Catholic Christian faith. The cover features a portrait of John Calvin, one of Christendom's chief heresiarchs in a characteristically Mephistophelian light. Belloc examines five of the largest, broadest and most influential heresies that have confronted the Church: Arianism, Mohammedanism (Islam), Albigensianism, Protestantism and what Belloc terms the "Modern Attack" which may in fact be, or is the precursor to, the Spirit of Antichrist. Arianism arose during the power politics of the Roman Empire and was generally supported by the upper-class elements in the Roman Army and the Imperial governing bureaucracy. It was easier more appealing on a philosophic level because the preacher Arius exalted Jesus as the greatest creature of God yet denied the actual Divinity of Christ. Belloc speculates that varying strains of Arianism provided a catalyst for the Nestorian and Monophysite schisms in the Church during the 5th century in the context of anti-Imperial political causes among the Christians of the East. The Arian heresy eventually died out at the same time Islam threatened both Eastern and Western boundaries of Christian Europe. Islam began, according to Belloc, as a heretical doctrine preached to its originally pagan Arab audience rather than as a new religion in itself. Mohammed affirmed the Catholic attributes of a creator God, the Virgin Birth, the prophetic legacy of Jesus and the Last Judgement where Jesus would return to judge good and evil. However, Mohammed totally disavowed the Incarnation of Christ, the tradition of the Apostles and the Church's sacraments that Christ instituted. Islam found a ready audience in the Middle East disenchanted with Byzantine rule and nearly gobbled up both Western and Eastern Christendom by sheer fanaticism and military prowess had it not been for the Spanish re-conquest and the Crusades. Belloc notes the many strengths of Islamic society and (writing in 1938) predicts a resurgence of radical Islam again assaulting the West. Albigensianism was a movement popular in southern France among nobles who were disenchanted with the structure of the Catholic Church. The "Albigensies" were named after a region in France, and the heresy consisted of a radical anti-institutional attitude toward the Church. Basing their philosophy on ancient cosmologies imported from the East, these heretics abandoned marriage, the Church's sacraments and believed in the equality authority of women and men officially preaching the Gospel message. They were eventually destroyed in a French-Papal crusade that assured the development of a united Catholic France. The Protestant attack's most perilous fruits were the denial of a united, authoritative Church, the doctrine of predestination and the denial of free will and of course the idea that material wealth was a sign of God's blessing. Belloc calls Calvin's theology that of a "Moloch God" who predestines souls to heaven and hell indefinitely before linear time began. However, Calvin's tremendous historical influence has been shown by the uplifting of the traditional Catholic ban on usury and an increasing control of individual life and property by both private (capitalist) and government (socialist/communist) interests. Catholic and Protestant Europe came to blows against each during the 17th century and neither side gained ascendancy. Catholic Europe gradually fell behind Protestant Europe in the eighteenth century except for Napoleon's brief conquests after 1800. Protestant Europe, especially Britain and Prussia, greatly expanded their power in the 19th century but by the early 20th century both the Catholic and Protestant regions of Europe had completely exhausted themselves. Since Protestantism has collapsed in much the way Catholicism is now struggling to survive, Belloc's "Modern Attack" has come to the fore. Belloc devotes only a handful of pages to the Modern Attack and does not go into very many details about what and whom it constitutes. Modernism in its broadest definition encompasses a plethora of different political movements, philosophies, ideologies, superstitions and pseudo-religions, but is basically the denial of God's existence as a transcendent Being independent of humanity and the material world. According to Modernism, man created God in order to deal with complex problems of life that had no material ("scientific" or "rational") solution at primitive stages in human evolution and therefore what God actually exists is merely a quaint figment of our imaginations. Belloc notes that there can be no peace or tolerance between the Catholic position and that of the Modern Attack. Either the Church will be swallowed up until something as small as "the Pope and the twelve apostles" (better put if Belloc simply said "the twelve apostles") remain or the Church reemerges triumphant as it had in the past. Belloc concludes his survey in an optimistic rather than pessimistic light. Even if the Church shrinks to an obscure sect invisible, ignored and frequently ridiculed in the neo-pagan society arising, it can never be destroyed and it will always remain a witness to the Truth until Christ returns.
