Dissolving Illusions: Disease, Vaccines, and The Forgotten History, by Suzanne Humphries MD, Roman Bystrianyk

Not too long ago, lethal infections were feared in the Western world. Since that time, many countries have undergone a transformation from disease cesspools to much safer, healthier habitats. Starting in the mid-1800s, there was a steady drop in deaths from all infectious diseases, decreasing to relatively minor levels by the early 1900s. The history of that transformation involves famine, poverty, filth, lost cures, eugenicist doctrine, individual freedoms versus state might, protests and arrests over vaccine refusal, and much more. Today, we are told that medical interventions increased our lifespan and single-handedly prevented masses of deaths. But is this really true? Dissolving Illusions details facts and figures from long-overlooked medical journals, books, newspapers, and other sources. Using myth-shattering graphs, this book shows that vaccines, antibiotics, and other medical interventions are not responsible for the increase in lifespan and the decline in mortality from infectious diseases. If the medical profession could systematically misinterpret and ignore key historical information, the question must be asked, “What else is ignored and misinterpreted today?” Perhaps the best reason to know our history is so that the worst parts are never repeated.

Informations everyone should know to make an informed decision on vaccines
By LINDA SUNKLE-PIERUCKI
It is good to hear the 'other side of the story' on vaccines: having had children who reacted badly to childhood immunizations, and seeing the same thing happen with grandchildren, I am understandably nervous over the current push to vaccinate against every possible thing. I am also old enough to remember when children regularly got measles, chicken pox, mumps and the like (I had them all). . .and never remember anyone having a serious problem recovering uneventfully. Anyone who listens to the news and reads current articles on advances in medicine has to be aware that there has been a great deal of 'spin' on this issue . . .and one seldom finds any true refutation of this spin except in 'alternative health' articles. As a critical reader, I not only read those articles but look for source documents and read those sources carefully, too. What I find is that there are plenty of small studies supporting Dr Andrew Wakefield's supposedly-discredited findings on an autism,/MMR link . . . and realizing that the majority of funding for such research comes from the very pharmaceutical industry which sells these vaccines. That is why there are NO large studies-and why these small studies get buried. There's a major profit motive here-a profit not endangered by valid lawsuits due to the Federal Government shielding them from litigation.

One of the first clues-to me-was the continued insistence that modern medicine has increased the human life expectancy by many years. This is supposed to be common knowledge but what most people dont understand is that simply the reduction of infant mortality and childbirth deaths make up most of the increase. The figures are an average of ALL lives. No, your great-great-great-grandfather lived to be well over 45, most likely. You may be surprised to find just how far over 45 yrs! As the family genealogist, I read a lot of historical documents and even a cursory examination of lifespan among those people doesnt show that shortened lifespan: I had a great many ancestors in the 1700-1800s who live to nearly-or more than-100 yrs old. I can also see that some family lines had short lifespans . .apparently heredity plays a large part in this. Some families were also very good at raising a large number of children to adulthood, where others suffered the loss of most of their children in infancy. Clearly there are other things going on here-and I suspect that good nutrition and rudimentary sanitation had a great deal to do with it. It certainly wasnt vaccination OR antibiotics.

In reading Dr Humphries book, she expounds on infant mortality based on delivery methods and attendant hygiene as part of the cause for better childbirth success. What she says here echoes an obscure sociological article written about the midwives of Northern Michigan before 1900 . . .again, something I was researching for genealogy. She also points out that the dreaded 'iron lung' used for paralysis patients 70 years ago has been replaced by the standard ventilator. Nearly all of us know someone who has needed to be on a ventilator during a hospitalization in recent years-we have never equated it with the 'iron lung'-a much more scary image!! Her numerous charts clearly show that the incidence of the original dread diseases which we are dutifully vaccinating for were already in decline-both in contagion and in strength, before vaccines against them were in use. This is usually the way communicable diseases work: a disease that kills too many of it's victims starves itself out of existence. The usual course of such viruses and diseases is to become weaker over time and for many more people to survive them. This week, after the big scare over Ebola (which, btw, didn't become epidemic in the US because we treated it with quarantine, hygiene and supportive medical care)-is now mutating into a less fatal but likely more infective disease . . .the usual course of such dread diseases. It's spread has been facilitated by poor nutrition, non-existent sanitation and the proliferation of burial customs that keep the dearly departed around the house to continue to infect.

In short, this book is well-worth reading. There are a lot of facts here that the average person does NOT know . . including the fact that many of these vaccines can actually spread a form of the very disease being vaccinated against and that past vaccination doesnt actually protect you from it. There are some things that are likely worth the risk of vaccination-such as tetanus and your dog's rabies vaccine. Others likely may protect against childhood diseases-for a time-but the possible bad reaction can affect a child for life. Is it worth it? You decide.

Someday Anti-Vaxxers will be thanked. If there is a baby coming in your family (or already here), you MUST READ THIS BOOK!!
By claudia
If you are pregnant, READ THIS BOOK!! You need to know the difference between which health care professionals truly care about your family's health, and those who are so in bed with Big Pharma that they don't even know they have been brain-washed.

I looked down my nose at anti-vaxxers with the best of them until a couple of years ago when I decided I should start to challenge those nit-wits with some facts. So I did internet research and gradually came to the conclusion that, well, maybe, some of them had a point or two. I started to say more reasonable things about people who opted not to vaccinate their kids. Then I became a grandma. I started reading even MORE intently.

NO ONE has published better arguments for taking an honest look at vaccinations than Suzanne Humphries (MD) and Roman Bystrianyk. The folks who want the anti-vaxxers to look stupid HATE this book. A group of them organized to bad-mouth it. Clearly a dozen or so of them got together on Dec 30 and 31st and hammered out a series of one-star reviews.... without a doubt these are the words of people who have NOT read this book.

Now I have little tolerance for the empty reasoning of the pro-vaccine folks... they offer far more propaganda than proof. There are fully a million kids in the US who have never been vaccinated and yet the CDC absolutely refuses to compare the health outcomes of those who are and those who are not vaccinated. Do you want to know why? I'm pretty certain, they'd go down in flames. RARELY does the media do a fair job of exposing how ineffective the vaccines are, and main-stream media also refuses to take an honest look at the damage they do. Robert Kennedy Jr, Jenny McCarthy, Dr. Wakefield, and Katie Curic are not crazy people, but when Big Pharma wants to defend their territory, they will not hesitate to destroy whole careers and any publication who crosses their line (until retractions are issued).

This book is a great place to start if you want to understand anti-vaxxers. I thought I knew a few things before I read it, but I learned something amazing on almost every page. I now proudly stand with the brave folks who stood up to power and ridicule with truth. I am an anti-vaxxer.

MUST READ if you have any questions about the safety of vaccines. I first became aware of Dr. Humphries after viewing her interview on Dr. Mercola's site http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2015/01/18/history-vaccination.aspx. The interview can give you a good idea of the topics she expands on in her wonderful book and it is great to see the passion she has.
Vaccines are clearly a highly controversial topic. Dr. Humphries is a board certified nephrologist who bought the vaccine story hook line and sinker. But she is one of the rare physicians with he integrity to question what she was taught when her observations disagree. And disagree they did. Many of her critically ill patients were forced to have vaccines that she did not prescribe and shortly after their vaccinations many of them had serious life threatening complications,
She quit her $350K annual salary as a hospital nephrologist to carefully research the history of vaccines. She now earns less than 10% of what she did when she was practicing as a physician because she felt she has a higher calling to warn people about the untold story and hidden history of the vaccination programs starting all the way back to smallpox.
One of the consistent justifications for their use is the eradication of smallpox and polio. But after she carefully reviewed the medical literature she uncovered a completely different story that is being promoted today by public health officials and most physicians. About 25% of the book consists of the thousands of references that she has in the book. This is a very carefully researched book.
I purchase many items and books and Amazon and value their reviews. They are some of the best on the internet. I just want to warn you that you will see many one star one line comments reviews of this book. They are from a group that call themselves skeptics and are strongly pro vaccine. Sadly they don't have the courage to review any data that conflicts with their beliefs. I can assure you that none of them read the book This is particularly tragic as if they were honest with themselves many would reconsider their position. Anyone who has concerns about vaccines simply needs to read this excellent well researched book. It is hard to imagine that a careful review of her excellent work will not radically change your perspective on this important and controversial issue.

The Seventh Seal (BFI Film Classics), by Melvyn Bragg

A medieval allegory of faith and doubt, The Seventh Seal contains the horrors of witch-burnings and plague, yet also features flashes of peace and joy. Each volume in the "BFI Film Classics" series contains a personal commentary on the film, a brief production history and a detailed filmography.

Amazon.com Review
This warm appreciation of The Seventh Seal is also a biographical account of two very different people. Melvyn Bragg, who interviewed Bergman in one of the very first broadcasts of his South Bank Show, recalls how he grew up with Bergman's films. As he recounts how Bergman's art accompanied him on his journey to adulthood he also traces the progress of Bergman's own life and career, which reached its maturity at the time The Seventh Seal was released. Bragg's unique approach to the story and the making of The Seventh Seal demonstrates how a great movie can have as strong an impact upon a film lover as it does upon its film maker.

About the Author
Melvyn Bragg is an author and broadcaster. He is Controller of Arts Programmes at London Weekend Television. His latest novel is Crystal Rooms.

Almost worthless
By Kerry Walters
There's a lot of secondary commentary on Bergman out there. My experience that most of it is pretty bad. Its authors usually think that there's something profound, revealing, and deeply important about Bergman's films, but they have a great deal of difficulty enunciating precisely what they mean. So they tend to be disappointingly vague.

Melvyn Bragg's little BFI volume on Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" is one of the worst of these faux commentaries. In a total text of about 50 pages (minus the stills reproduced from the film, which are actually the best part of his book), he devotes perhaps two pages to actually talking about the movie (this in Chapter 5). The greater bulk of the book is a bizarre and spotty memoir in which Bragg talks about his own childhood, his early love of cinema, his lusting after Harriet Andersson in "Summer with Monika," and his religious upbringing. It's only at this point that he begins to say a few sketchy things about his book's putative topic, at which point it's too little, too late.

To compound errors, Bragg incredibly ignores Bergman's two autobiographies, The Magic Lantern and Images, even though both were published and available before his own book. Instead, he refers to a 25 year old collection of interviews, Bergman on Bergman, which Bergman later explicitly repudiated.

Give this one a miss. Truly.

The worst book that I've read in an otherwise splendid series
By Robert Moore
I absolutely love the BFI Film Classics series. Nearly every book in the series that I have read has profoundly illumined both the films under discussion and the life and careers of the principle people involved.

The reason that James Agee was such an extraordinary film critic was he took you directly into the heart of each film he discussed. Bragg does not. He skirts around the film for much of this already slim volume to talk about his own reaction to the film and to talk at length about an interview he did with with Bergman. He eventually does get around to THE SEVENTH SEAL, but he deals so much with his own reaction to things that the book should have been retitled MELVYN BRAGG AND THE SEVENTH SEAL. A book like this should call attention to the movie, not to the writer, yet Bragg again and again refocuses the text on himself.

There is eventually some good stuff on the film itself, but all you can think while reading this is how much Bragg has intruded upon the narrative. I strongly, strongly recommend very nearly every book in this series. But not this one. Skip it.

Rigid series format inhibits a full study of Bergman classic
By darragh o'donoghue
This is another rather disappointing entry in the BFI Classics series, a padded look at one of European cinema's most famous totems, Bergman's 'The Seventh Seal', that medieval allegory of plague, faith, doubt, death, God and chess.
It is disappoint because it promises so much but doesn't deliver. The opening chapter, 'Art and Religion', looks at Bergman's attempts to return Art, its creation and reception, to the condition of medieval craftsmanship and faith, when to create was synonymous with worship. Bragg, an acclaimed novelist and arts broadcaster (he made a film about Bergman in 1978) has recently produced two major series on religious subjects, but any hope for a serious tackling of this aspect in Bergman's work, and 'The Seventh Seal' in particular, is quickly jettisoned in favour of less demanding chapters on Bragg's first exposure to cinema and Bergman (the usual 'alternative to Hollywood' stuff), and the importance of Bergman's childhood (which is obvious to anyone who's seen a Bergman film, especially 'Fanny and Alexander'; although it's alarming to discover the young Bergman's obsession with Hitler, for whom his stern pastor father was a dead ringer).
Another chapter deals with the genesis of the film in a play Bergman wrote for an acting school, but fails to analyse the way Bergman, in this and all his work, systematically uses theatre and acting as a metaphor.
What is especially disappointing is that the final chapter, a brief synopsis of the film, is brilliant, full of casual asides that are actually dazzling shards of critical insight. Too late, Bragg reveals he has the measure of this dark, enigmatic, unnervingly comic film (one actually dismissed by most Bergmanophiles as superficial and uncharacteristic, but Bragg doesn't mention this) - Bragg's intelligence is dimmed by the rigid format of the series.

Midnight in Broad Daylight: A Japanese American Family Caught Between Two Worlds, by Pamela Rotner Sakamoto

Meticulously researched and beautifully written, the true story of a Japanese American family that found itself on opposite sides during World War II—an epic tale of family, separation, divided loyalties, love, reconciliation, loss, and redemption—this is a riveting chronicle of U.S.–Japan relations and the Japanese experience in America.

After their father’s death, Harry, Frank, and Pierce Fukuhara—all born and raised in the Pacific Northwest—moved to Hiroshima, their mother’s ancestral home. Eager to go back to America, Harry returned in the late 1930s. Then came Pearl Harbor. Harry was sent to an internment camp until a call came for Japanese translators and he dutifully volunteered to serve his country. Back in Hiroshima, his brothers Frank and Pierce became soldiers in the Japanese Imperial Army.

As the war raged on, Harry, one of the finest bilingual interpreters in the United States Army, island-hopped across the Pacific, moving ever closer to the enemy—and to his younger brothers. But before the Fukuharas would have to face each other in battle, the U.S. detonated the atomic bomb over Hiroshima, gravely injuring tens of thousands of civilians, including members of their family.

Alternating between the American and Japanese perspectives, Midnight in Broad Daylight captures the uncertainty and intensity of those charged with the fighting as well as the deteriorating home front of Hiroshima—as never told before in English—and provides a fresh look at the dropping of the first atomic bomb. Intimate and evocative, it is an indelible portrait of a resilient family, a scathing examination of racism and xenophobia, an homage to the tremendous Japanese American contribution to the American war effort, and an invaluable addition to the historical record of this extraordinary time.

Review
Deeply reported and researched… Midnight in Broad Daylight” not only tells one family’s remarkable story but also makes an important contribution to our knowledge of the Japanese-American experience in World War II, on both sides of the ocean and the hyphen. (New York Times Book Review)

[S]ublime prose and prodigious research…“Midnight in Broad Daylight” is as riveting and moving a book as has ever been written about World War II, made all the more compelling by the blending of American and Japanese perspectives. (Seattle Times)

“An intimately detailed look at the agony of a Japanese American family struggling to maintain American loyalty amid discrimination and war. . . . A richly textured narrative history. . . . A beautifully rendered work wrought with enormous care and sense of compassionate dignity.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

“[O]ne of the most wrenching, inspirational-and until now unknown-true epics of World War II….luminous, magisterial…[Sakamoto] has helped shape and set the standard for a vital and necessary new genre: transpacific literature. Her readers will want more.” (Ron Powers, Pulitizer Prize winner and author of Mark Twain: A Life)

“Riveting in its alternating American and Japanese perspectives, and a fresh look at the dropping of the atom bomb over Hiroshima, this story is inspirational as well as educational. A great addition to World War II literature.” (Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, coauthor of Farewell to Manzanar)

“This deeply researched and elegantly written history is a rare human drama that spans the Japanese-American experience as few, if any, books have done…. a cultural document that immerses the reader…” (USA Today)

“Midnight in Broad Daylight is a deeply moving, well-written work that ranks among the better accounts of the injuries inflicted in wartime on civilian and ethnic populations. Students of war crimes and crimes against humanity are sure to notice this book.” (Herbert Bix, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan)

Superb History, Biography, Prose
By David M. Sherman
This is a brilliant combination of history and biography written in stylish prose that captures the reader from the start. Many of the editorial reviews have stated already stated that this is "riveting in its alternating American and Japanese perspectives, and a fresh look at the dropping of the atom bomb over Hiroshima, this story is inspirational as well as educational." This is truly an epic tale. You are taken on a family journey; portrayed with style and grace. I was captured and entranced from the outset. Ms. Sakamoto should be highly praised for discovering this heartbreaking, heartrending story, and praised for the detailed research that went into the preparing this complex story. I loved taking the journey, enjoyed the format, and the entwining of history and biography. I agree with others that it is "a richly textured narrative history. . . . A beautifully rendered work wrought with enormous care and sense of compassionate dignity." You will discover that you have much to learn about the Japanese-American experience during WWII. As with all good history and biography, there are many lessons applicable to modern day discourse. This book has challenged many of my present day views. Good! That's a sign of a superb historian! As one reviewer has noted, this is an intimate and evocative portrait of a family, "an indelible portrait of a resilient family, a scathing examination of racism and xenophobia, an homage to the tremendous Japanese American contribution to the American war effort, and an invaluable addition to the historical record of this extraordinary time." I agree wholeheartedly. You will not be disappointed. I hope the book receives the awards it justly deserves. Timely and beautifully written. This should be a top ten book on any reviewers list.

Extraordinary tale, with lessons for today...
By Fred Gorbet
This is a truly wonderful book.
It is an inspiring story--about family, about loyalties, about endurance and optimism. And Pamela Rotner Sakamoto has told it so very well.
Although it is exceptionally researched, the book is an easy and engrossing read.
But the book is so much more than the story of Harry and his family.
It is really a tale for our times – focussed on the damage that xenophobic reactions to "others" can cause, as well as the
personal harm and suffering that come from blind allegiance to ideology. I had known before I read the book that
the Japanese had suffered greatly through the war because of their unwillingness to surrender (The World War II museum
in New Orleans makes the point very well), but this book brings it home at a very personal level. It would be
wonderful if we could learn the lessons today that Harry’s story and this book teach.

A Must-Read!
By Susan Ray
Engrossing book. Non-fiction that reads like a good novel. Sakamoto captures the sense of loss and righteous confusion felt by the Fukuharas over their situation. The reader can empathize with all members of the family and feel their pain and yet be in awe of their firmly-held belief that things will be OK and that they can endure their suffering in the present because there is light at the end of the tunnel. One of the best books (fiction or non-fiction) I have read in a long time!
