"The Joy of Cooking for the kale set, educating readers beyond step by step instructions."
—W Magazine

About the Author
Wellness entrepreneur, world-traveling chef and passionate food educator, Amanda Chantal Bacon began her journey toward health at a young age. Sick with chronic respiratory ills that proved unresponsive to antibiotics and other Western medicine, she credits her recovery to an Ayurvedic doctor who removed sugar, wheat and dairy from her diet and saved her life. After graduating high school in her native New York City, Bacon traveled across Europe, South America and New Zealand, working in restaurant kitchens and developing a love for the diverse cultures and flavors of each region.

Back in the U.S., Bacon studied at the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont, which raised her consciousness on the importance of sustainability, sourcing and collaborating with local producers. She continued her culinary journey, working in the kitchens of celebrated Los Angeles restaurants like Lucques and Canele, and serving as assistant food and wine editor for Los Angeles Times Magazine. The gestalt of her professional food experience, world travels and immersion in Eastern wellness finally led Bacon to become a wellness entrepreneur with her launch of Moon Juice in January 2012.

Amazing book: A bit of chemistry book in parts but I love the originality, the story, the recipes and the stunning pictures.
By Zen*Yogi*Girl
first became aware of Moon juice though a blog I follow and though I am not luck enough to be close enough to the store to shop in person; have slowly but surely been trying out some of their various different potions such as beauty, brain and dream dust, made of adaptogenic herbs. So when I saw the book, I knew I had to have it. If nothing else for the fact that as the Amazon sneak peak reveals, it is loaded with simply breathtaking photography!

Hopefully when you purchase this cookbook, you will be familiar with the Moon Juice brand and not be surprised by the recipes and the ingredients they feature. This is not a cookbook with which one can shop in a local grocery store, heck even Whole Foods would be a long shot for some items -though to be fair there are plenty of others that use easily sourced ingredients such as chia seeds, nuts, milks, coconut. But there are also recipes that call for Kombu strips, lucuma powder, mesquite powder and colloidal silver. I write this not to discourage potential buyers, but just so they are aware what they are getting into before a purchase. There are also more than 75 recipes so you can be sure to find things that appeal to your tastes, pantry or cooking ability.

The premise of the book is food as medicine which is something I have always strongly believed in. It is plant based and begins with a story of the author, plagued by sickness as a child, given medicine as a remedy, with still no resolution. Years later, though experimenting with food and herbs learned that these can be just as much, if not more of a remedy in helping us look and feel our best. The book also, importantly, takes us away from healthy being a quick fix to more of a lifelong journey.

With that we being with the 10 pillars of the moon kitchen, which include consuming good fats, enjoying cultured and fermented foods, and eating organic. There is an incredible guide to “High functioning foods” - foods that can detoxify, provide immunity, boost metabolism, brain food, Inflammation tamer – I found this fascinating and different from traditional guides. There is a kitchen guide -equipment to have, pantry staples (note, as expected a juicer and dehydrator are both suggested pieces to own).

Then we go to the recipes: Juices (cucumber pineapple jalapeno was amazing, with a kick that reminded me of my favorite cocktail only far healthier); milks, Moon milks, shakes and lattes, and I really liked the simplified recipe for Golden milk which is something I currently drink nightly, albeit with a store bought powder, so this is easy and cheaper. Then broth bowls, yoghurt, cheese and Kefir; Fermented vegetables, cosmic provisions (think snacks and basics.

We finish on a sweet note with the bakery section, raw of course and raw chocolate which beings with cacao paste and butter but serves as a base for so many fun recipes.

As this book states, it is not an ordinary cookbook, its an alchemist cookbook, think of combining lots of sometimes unusual but high functioning foods to deliver tasty outcomes that heal. It is for the adventurous cook, someone looking beyond the basic raw cookbook and someone that want to experiment making potions that sooth, heal and target specific health functions. It’s a bit like a mad chemistry book in parts but I love the originality, the story and the stunning pictures. One for the coffee table or the kitchen!

this book is BEAUTIFUL. Aesthetically
By AB
First, this book is BEAUTIFUL. Aesthetically, the pictures are gorgeous and should inspire you to aim to recreate whatever culinary creation is highlighted, be it a moon milk or cosmic provision. In the same vein, I feel that you could buy this book for the pictures alone and be equally happy. That said, given that this is a COOKBOOK: I was pleasantly surprised by the collection and variety of recipes curated. Our family has since moved from LA, but when we lived there, we were frequent patrons of both the Venice and Silverlake locations. Now in Colorado, I continue to purchase via their online store, but am limited to (mostly) dry goods. Thus, I was extremely excited when I heard of the cookbook, and immediately pre-ordered earlier this summer. My ONLY concern was that perhaps, the ingredients called for would be too exotic or simply inaccessible. However, upon receiving the cookbook, I was delighted to discover that many of the ingredients are already in my pantry! Since receiving the book, I have recreated many of my favorite moon milks, and couldn't be happier with this purchase!
Just a quick disclaimer: this cookbook is likely not intended for everyone. Albeit, I own a Vitamix, dehydrator and juicer- and keep bags of maca and lucuma stocked away in my pantry. But, I'm not a perfect eater, and I have picky toddlers, so many nights are more pizza than kelp, but that's okay! And, I think that's one demographic this book appeals to; Chantal Bacon does not scold you nor seek to create a version of perfectionism, but rather, she spends time detailing how incorporating just a little "moon juice" in your daily life can reap enormous benefits.
I cannot recommend this book enough!

If you are into heathy magical superfood treats, nut milks, nut cheeses and all things raw and snacky, you will love this book. Plus the book itself is beautiful, the photos are magical. Super excited to get started and make some medicinal chocolates for christmas this year!

Singularity Is Near, by Ray Kurzweil

The great inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil is one of the best-known and most controversial advocates for the role of machines in the future of humanity. In his latest book, he envisions an event—the "singularity"—in which technological change becomes so rapid and so profound that our bodies and brains will merge with our machines.

The Singularity Is Near portrays what life will be like after this event— a human- machine civilization where our experiences shift from real reality to virtual reality and where our intelligence becomes nonbiological and trillions of times more powerful. In practical terms, this means that human aging and pollution will be reversed; world hunger will be solved; our bodies and environment transformed by nanotechnology to overcome the limitations of biology, including death; and virtually any physical product can be created from information alone. The Singularity Is Near also considers the social and philosophical ramifications of these changes, and is certain to be one of the most widely discussed and provocative books of 2005.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Renowned inventor Kurzweil (The Age of Spiritual Machines) may be technology's most credibly hyperbolic optimist. Elsewhere he has argued that eliminating fat intake can prevent cancer; here, his quarry is the future of consciousness and intelligence. Humankind, it runs, is at the threshold of an epoch ("the singularity," a reference to the theoretical limitlessness of exponential expansion) that will see the merging of our biology with the staggering achievements of "GNR" (genetics, nanotechnology and robotics) to create a species of unrecognizably high intelligence, durability, comprehension, memory and so on. The word "unrecognizable" is not chosen lightly: wherever this is heading, it won't look like us. Kurzweil's argument is necessarily twofold: it's not enough to argue that there are virtually no constraints on our capacity; he must also convince readers that such developments are desirable. In essence, he conflates the wholesale transformation of the species with "immortality," for which read a repeal of human limit. In less capable hands, this phantasmagoria of speculative extrapolation, which incorporates a bewildering variety of charts, quotations, playful Socratic dialogues and sidebars, would be easier to dismiss. But Kurzweil is a true scientist—a large-minded one at that—and gives due space both to "the panoply of existential risks" as he sees them and the many presumed lines of attack others might bring to bear. What's arresting isn't the degree to which Kurzweil's heady and bracing vision fails to convince—given the scope of his projections, that's inevitable—but the degree to which it seems downright plausible. Kurzweil is one of the world’s most respected thinkers and entrepreneurs. Yet the thesis he posits in Singularity is so singular that many readers will be astounded—and perhaps skeptical. Think Blade Runner or Being John Malkovich magnified trillion-fold. Even if one were to embrace his techno-optimism, which he backs up with fascinating details, Kurzweil leaves some important questions relating to politics, economics, and morality unanswered. If machines in our bodies can rebuild cells, for example, why couldn’t they be reengineered as weapons? Or think of singularity, notes the New York Times Book Review, as the "Manhattan Project model of pure science without ethical constraints." Kurzweil’s vision requires technology, which we continue to build. But it also requires mass acceptance and faith.

From Booklist
Continuing the themes of The Age of Spiritual Machines (1999), Kurzweil further expounds his conviction that the human being will be succeeded by a superintelligent entity that is partly biological, partly computerized. Welcoming this prospect, and regarding it as inevitable, Kurzweil plunges into contemporary technological arenas, particularly genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics. Citing examples from medical devices to military weapons in which human control is increasingly detached from the autonomy of machines, Kurzweil stresses that trends are accelerating in terms of miniaturization and computational power. Eventually, smallness and speed reach a point of development, a "singularity," with implications Kurzweil says even he cannot imagine. Disinclined to categorize his views as dystopian or utopian, the author recognizes that his vision is profoundly threatening to concepts of human nature and individuality. A closing section on philosophy and ethics accordingly addresses objections to his optimistic predictions. An involved presentation, this is best for readers of the wide-angle, journalistic treatment Radical Evolution (2005), by Joel Garreau. Gilbert Taylor

Faith in Technology
By Stefan Popov
Ray Kurzweil has done a lot of good work. But being right on some things does not mean he is right about everything.

With his last couple of doublings on the exponential curve of human progress, he reaches deep into faith more so than science. There are some major biases and contradictions in his theories, along with getting one of his main premises completely wrong.

He thinks we can create AI when the computing power of a machine reaches the 125 trillion synapses you have in your average brain. From that point on, we never look back and rule the universe as human-machine hybrid gods.

There a couple of really big problems with that assumption.

One, he assumed each synapse in our brains is a logical switch, which at the time he wrote the book was considered a known fact. Fair mistake. But the very progress of technology proved him wrong. The latest in neuroscience has shown that the brain is vastly more complicated than that and each synapse is much closer to a very sophisticated micro-processor with thousands of gates than to a simple logical switch. So, to put that in perspective--a single developed human brain has 125 trillion (or thereabouts) processors working seamlessly in parallel, taking input from 200 billion nerve cells, with extremely low energy requirements and low heat output.

For comparison, the entire human race currently operates several billion micro-processors. I have no doubt that number will increase several-fold in the next couple of decades. The second most powerful supercomputer in the world, the Cray Titan, has 37 thousand. The next generation will have less nodes, albeit faster ones. Yes, they will get smaller, faster, more efficient. However, to think that we'll replicate in machine form the true networked complexity of the human brain in the next 10 or 20 years is just nuts, given that it takes 3-5 years to actually build the next generation of supercomputers and even more years before people actually figure out what to do with them. So, on the ‘hardware’ requirements for AI, under his original assumption, I think he was completely off and by orders of magnitude.

The even bigger issue is on the software side—his premise is that we only need to simulate the output of a super-complex system like the brain, not necessarily know how exactly the black box works. Hence, once we understand how the human brain works, we don’t need to rebuild it in machine form, we only need to build something which given the same inputs provides the same output. Then you’ll have true AI because we’ll have a machine that can self-learn, write unconstrained code, etc.

The problem here is that he has a very fundamental chicken and egg problem. The issue is that AI and digitalizing the brain is the very cornerstone of everything else in his writing—including nanobots (which even he admits will have their software written by a higher form of intelligence, not human) which truly kicks off the next stages of human-machine evolution. Right now we cannot even map what the brain really does on a molecular level, let alone accurately replicate it.

Furthermore, I know some very bright people who code for a living and even the best and brightest struggle with limited parallel programming and it gets exponentially more difficult with each level of parallelism you introduce. I am yet to meet a coder, no matter how self-confident, who will, with a straight face, claim that they can write software that can replicate or even approximate 125 trillion processors working in parallel. Kurzweil says that an AI unconstrained by physics or biology can write such code. So, while Kurzweil assumes that with increased computing power we’ll just figure such a true AI out, I’m not so sure it is that simple.

So, how do we get AI to begin with, if it truly takes a higher order of intelligence to write such an AI?

Overall, just like many futurists, there are hits and misses. I believe that when it comes to machines becoming pervasively widespread in everything we do, he is right on and has been for two decades. The next part, where humans become machine gods borders on religious (technology being the god here) fanaticism more so than on sound science.

Anyhow, time will tell, but I think he is at the very least off (if not completely wrong) on his timing—and by a lot.

The End Of Life As We Know It
By Mark Edward Bachmann
I remember several years ago telling people I had just subjected myself to the scariest book of my life after reading one about the supposedly inevitable nuclear implosion of Pakistan. Well, now I've found something that tops it, even though author Ray Kurzweil seems to imagine his book as a bolt of optimism.

Anyone who has ever played around with the arithmetic of compounding and exponential growth knows how crazy the numbers get as growth feeds on itself. The phenomenon is quite real in the world, and it describes everything from viral epidemics to Warren Buffet's fortune. Kurzweil applies the exponential growth paradigm to the future of technology. He sees not only change itself accelerating, but the rate of change too, if you can go back to your high school calculus and wrap your mind around that stomach-churning concept. The math starts quickly approaching infinity, which is why it's so weird.

"Singularity" is a common term-of-art among theoretical physicists, who apply it to a variety of seemingly irrational constructs, such as an infinitely large mass compressed towards an infinitely small point. Kurzweil co-opts the term for his own purpose here to mean the point in time where artificial intelligence starts exceeding human intelligence. Thereafter, it takes over its own programming and, being so powerful, does a better and better job of it. Because things are already moving so fast today, the accelerating rate of change means that Kurzweil's Singularity is closer than even optimists might imagine - hence the book's title. He projects it to occur somewhere in the middle of this century. Afterwards, nothing will ever again be the same.

In physics, unimaginable things start happening at singularity points, like energy explosions within black holes. Following Kurzweil's Singularity, the most garish science fiction fantasies start becoming commonplace. The combination of genetics, nanotechnology and robotics - which he refers to collectively as GNR - will transform all aspects of human existence. He believes, for example, that nanobots released into a person's bloodstream, will facilitate a comprehensive (that is to say, 100%) map of that person, including genetic code and nervous system, that can be uploaded and downloaded at will onto new "substrates". In other words, robotic copies of human beings - body, mind, memories, and (one presumes) soul - can be made that will appear indistinguishable from the originals. And for that matter, those originals themselves can be re-shaped at will, giving us all the opportunity to become brilliant, strong, happy, and beautiful.

Kurzweil tells us that artificial circuits replicating themselves at a molecular level will merge with the biological circuits that constitute our nervous systems, giving rise an "enhanced" human super-intelligence. Once this starts happening, what we now call the Internet will in effect become telepathic, giving these enhanced humans instantaneous access to all available knowledge and information as they fashion their brave new world. You see how explosive this gets? And it's just the beginning.

Once the process gets underway, the evolving super-intelligence keeps expanding until it permeates the entire planet and, still accelerating, eventually the universe. Kurzweil suggests that movement though time-space "wormholes" should one day facilitate rapid travel beyond our own galaxy, taking the process literally everywhere.

I realize that my amateur's survey of Kurzweil's thinking here makes him sound like a crank. However, let there be no mistake: he is an accomplished scientist and a highly sophisticated thinker. MIT-trained, he's an expert in artificial intelligence and has put his ideas into practice as a successful tech entrepreneur. Most of this book is not even devoted to prognostications, but to an in-depth review of research currently underway that lays the practical groundwork for virtually everything he talks about (except maybe the wormhole business). While he makes numerous leaps of faith in taking us from here to there, none of his forecasts represent sheer fantasy. He is an extremely good writer, and while staying true to what is in fact pretty complex science, describes it all in a way that makes it reasonably clear to lay readers.

For all his hardcore materialism, Kurzweil also has a whimsical streak. Every 50 pages or so, he breaks up his text with imaginary light-hearted debates among himself (appearing as "Ray"), various historical figures - Darwin, Freud, etc. - and a person named "Molly", who seems to be a student. Molly is bright, curious, skeptical, and not in the least bit awed by Ray or the others. The thing about Molly is that she appears in two separate guises: Molly 2004 (the year this book was being written), and Molly 2104, which is of course well beyond the Singularity. One of Kurzweil's key forecasts is that future science will learn how to arrest and even reverse the aging process, allowing people more-or-less to live forever at whatever age they choose. So Molly has made it through the Singularity and returned as a still-young woman to speak about it from experience.

Kurzweil is fully aware of the potential downside to his vision. He devotes one long chapter to what he calls "The Deeply Intertwined Promise and Peril of GNR". He devotes another even longer chapter to responding to critics, who have attacked his ideas from every possible perspective. While he treats most criticisms respectfully, in the end he largely dismisses them all. One partial exception and the one specific fear he himself does seem to harbor is of self-replicating nanobots. He and other scientists who seriously debate such stuff even have a short-hand term for this specter: The Grey Goo Problem. Were self-replication somehow to spin out of control, Kurzweil explains to us that in a matter of days it could, in theory, consume the Earth's entire biomass and reduce it to "grey goo". This is indeed a troubling prospect, since this endangered biomass includes all of us.

Interestingly, the cluster of criticisms that he responds to most gently are those arising from a spiritualist perspective. In one of his imaginary debates with "Molly", she repeatedly asks "Ray" if he believes in God. Ray surprises by dodging the question every time rather than saying no. Badgered into a corner, he finally avers: "For the sake of your question, we can consider God to be the universe, and I said that I believe in the universe." This sounds suspiciously like a yes, albeit with a twist. He then goes on to explain how his entire vision can be described as a picture of the universe "waking up" as enhanced human intelligence pervades its many corners. Religious people of an unorthodox bent might be tempted to embrace this image as God's self-realization. Fundamentalists of every stripe, however, were they to take K's cosmology seriously at all, would view it with disgust as the self-realization of God's Opposite Number.

For me, the most unnerving question that this book triggers is who will control these accelerating technologies. Reading through many passages of the book, I found it hard not hard to be thinking about Nazi scientists beavering away at the design of their Master Race, or North Korean labs re-programming the neural patterns of citizens lacking enthusiasm for Kim Jong-Un. Kurzweil seems to trust in the pragmatic good will of the scientific community, buttressed by regulation. However, not all scientists have good will, and he says nothing about who he supposes will regulate the regulators. I also find it hard to see what joy or challenge there could be in a world where machines or enhanced humans dominate everything. People choosing not to become "enhanced" would either have it forced upon them or face life as a sub-species. The line between utopia and dystopia here is pretty fuzzy, and I find it a little scary that Kurzweil doesn't seem to care. Maybe I've seen too many science fiction movies.

All that aside, I highly recommend this book. Decades ago when I was in college I used to describe about every other book I read as "changing my life", as we said in the day. Nowadays, no book changes my life, although the best ones still move the needle for me. Whether I like it or not, this one has me looking at things a little differently than I did before.

Too smart for most - pity!
By Amazon Customer
First check Ray Kurzweil's biography. I trust you agree that he’s probably quite smart, a serial achiever, and a thinker of consequence, fairly unique and that his deliberations might deserve serious consideration. I have studied his 2005 book ‘The Singularity is Near – when Humans Transcend Biology” and have recognised it as the foundation to much that has been written, reproduced and debated ever since. I’m no different and I’ve leant heavily on his work in my book 'Leading into the Future' (WIP).
The publication of ‘The Singularity is Near’ was ground breaking and remains a definitive logic study of science not because it’s the only treatise of a technology shaped future but precisely because it was written by Ray Kurzweil. He is the man on the spot; in the know and part of the collegiate of thought leaders that are making it happen. This is no armchair ‘what might be’ expose or a new series script for a ‘Space Odyssey’ sequel. It is an explanation of why it is so and why it matters, and it is still today, discussed and debated; it remains highly relevant and a verifiable road map of our progress towards actualization of technological progress.

American Gods: The Tenth Anniversary Edition: A Novel, by Neil Gaiman

First published in 2001, American Gods became an instant classic—an intellectual and artistic benchmark from the multiple-award-winning master of innovative fiction, Neil Gaiman. Now discover the mystery and magic of American Gods in this tenth anniversary edition. Newly updated and expanded with the author’s preferred text, this commemorative volume is a true celebration of a modern masterpiece by the one, the only, Neil Gaiman.

A storm is coming . . .

Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the magic day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life.

But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow’s best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself.

Life as Wednesday’s bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined—it is a job that takes him on a dark and strange road trip and introduces him to a host of eccentric characters whose fates are mysteriously intertwined with his own. Along the way Shadow will learn that the past never dies; that everyone, including his beloved Laura, harbors secrets; and that dreams, totems, legends, and myths are more real than we know. Ultimately, he will discover that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing—an epic war for the very soul of America—and that he is standing squarely in its path.

Relevant and prescient, American Gods has been lauded for its brilliant synthesis of “mystery, satire, sex, horror, and poetic prose” (Michael Dirda, Washington Post Book World) and as a modern phantasmagoria that “distills the essence of America” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). It is, quite simply, an outstanding work of literary imagination that will endure for generations.

Amazon.com Review
American Gods is Neil Gaiman's best and most ambitious novel yet, a scary, strange, and hallucinogenic road-trip story wrapped around a deep examination of the American spirit. Gaiman tackles everything from the onslaught of the information age to the meaning of death, but he doesn't sacrifice the razor-sharp plotting and narrative style he's been delivering since his Sandman days.

Shadow gets out of prison early when his wife is killed in a car crash. At a loss, he takes up with a mysterious character called Wednesday, who is much more than he appears. In fact, Wednesday is an old god, once known as Odin the All-father, who is roaming America rounding up his forgotten fellows in preparation for an epic battle against the upstart deities of the Internet, credit cards, television, and all that is wired. Shadow agrees to help Wednesday, and they whirl through a psycho-spiritual storm that becomes all too real in its manifestations. For instance, Shadow's dead wife Laura keeps showing up, and not just as a ghost--the difficulty of their continuing relationship is by turns grim and darkly funny, just like the rest of the book.

Armed only with some coin tricks and a sense of purpose, Shadow travels through, around, and underneath the visible surface of things, digging up all the powerful myths Americans brought with them in their journeys to this land as well as the ones that were already here. Shadow's road story is the heart of the novel, and it's here that Gaiman offers up the details that make this such a cinematic book--the distinctly American foods and diversions, the bizarre roadside attractions, the decrepit gods reduced to shell games and prostitution. "This is a bad land for Gods," says Shadow.

More than a tourist in America, but not a native, Neil Gaiman offers an outside-in and inside-out perspective on the soul and spirituality of the country--our obsessions with money and power, our jumbled religious heritage and its societal outcomes, and the millennial decisions we face about what's real and what's not. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
Titans clash, but with more fuss than fury in this fantasy demi-epic from the author of Neverwhere. The intriguing premise of Gaiman's tale is that the gods of European yore, who came to North America with their immigrant believers, are squaring off for a rumble with new indigenous deities: "gods of credit card and freeway, of Internet and telephone, of radio and hospital and television, gods of plastic and of beeper and of neon." They all walk around in mufti, disguised as ordinary people, which causes no end of trouble for 32-year-old protagonist Shadow Moon, who can't turn around without bumping into a minor divinity. Released from prison the day after his beloved wife dies in a car accident, Shadow takes a job as emissary for Mr. Wednesday, avatar of the Norse god Grimnir, unaware that his boss's recruiting trip across the American heartland will subject him to repeat visits from the reanimated corpse of his dead wife and brutal roughing up by the goons of Wednesday's adversary, Mr. World. At last Shadow must reevaluate his own deeply held beliefs in order to determine his crucial role in the final showdown. Gaiman tries to keep the magical and the mundane evenly balanced, but he is clearly more interested in the activities of his human protagonists: Shadow's poignant personal moments and the tale's affectionate slices of smalltown life are much better developed than the aimless plot, which bounces Shadow from one episodic encounter to another in a design only the gods seem to know. Mere mortal readers will enjoy the tale's wit, but puzzle over its strained mythopoeia. (One-day laydown, June 19)Forecast: Even when he isn't in top form, Gaiman, creator of the acclaimed Sandman comics series, trumps many storytellers. Momentously titled, and allotted a dramatic one-day laydown with a 12-city author tour, his latest will appeal to fans and attract mainstream review coverage for better or for worse because of the rich possibilities of its premise.

From Library Journal
In his latest novel, Gaiman (Neverwhere) explores the vast and bloody landscape of myths and legends where the gods of yore and the neoteric gods of now conflict in modern-day America. The antihero, a man of unusually acute intellect through whose eyes we witness the behind-the-scenes dynamics of human religion and faith, is a convict called Shadow. He is flung into the midst of a supernatural fray of gods such as Odin, Anansi, Loki One-Eye, Thor, and a multitude of other ancient divinities as they struggle for survival in an America beset by trends, fads, and constant upheaval an environment not good for gods. They are joined in this struggle by such contemporary deities as the geek-boy god Internet and the goddess Media. There's a nice plot twist in the end, and the fascinating subject matter and impressive mythic scope are handled creatively and expertly. Gaiman is an exemplary short story writer, but his ventures into novels are also compellingly imaginative. Highly recommended for all libraries. Ann Kim, "Library Journal"

Like Nothing Else
By Amazon Customer
This is an amazing book and I struggle to even find words to describe it. I my best estimation, the characters in the book or personifications of things that we idolize in American culture. The story that takes place mostly on the road, on the run, and prisons, national monuments, many strange an unforgettable characters. I would love to see this adapted into a television series. There's certainly plenty of material for something like that. Gaiman is one of the most imaginative writers around and this book stretches the imagination. I'm not sure if it's sci-fi, whore, action, drama, comedy, adventure, or some amalgamation of all of the genres on one but it is a great read.

A book about modern America, written by a Brit. And its Very Good
By craigzon harmer
What happens to gods after their believers die off and they're replaced by new gods?

If they never existed in the first place, then that's not a problem. But if they did, then this book offers an outcome -- they moved to the New World (North America) and live out their immortal existence in relative ignominy.

Ostensibly, the book is about the fate of the Old (and New) Gods in the New World, but it's also about the United Sates.

I'm having a hard time summarizing the book, but I couldn't put it down while I was reading it and I might read it again. Revelations at the end of the book cast a different light on events at the beginning of the book, so a reread of the book would interesting.

Who Needs The Other More: God or Man?
By 500 Books
Virtually every culture, around the world and across time, has some kind of religious/mythological belief system. Where did we come from? How are we to live? Those basic questions gave rise to hundreds, even thousands, of myths to give the answers (see: the entire Masks of God series I spent months of my life reading). In an anthropological/psychological sense, God did not create man. Man created the gods. And in Neil Gaiman's American Gods, we didn't just create them as concepts in the sky; they are corporeal beings and they need us, our prayers and our tributes, to thrive. But we as Americans haven't been giving them what they need for a long time now. What idols do we regard with something close to reverence today? TVs. Our phones. Our computers. And that has given rise to new gods in competition for our devotion with the old ones.

In its central and most straightforward plot line, American Gods follows Shadow Moon, a convict released from prison at the very beginning of the novel, and his work with the mysterious Mr. Wednesday to round up the old gods to do battle against the new in a final battle. But this isn't a straightforward novel, and its reach expands far beyond the basic premise. Gaiman explores the history of the gods, explaining how they got to the United States in the first place...from prehistoric travel across the land bridge over the Bering Straight, to the Vikings, to the slave trade and more. He shows us how these neglected gods survive in the real world: Bilquis, the Queen of Sheba, is a prostitute, and Thoth and Anubis have set up shop as undertakers for the minority community in a small town in Illinois. There's a short story within the novel of a gay Arab man, trying desperately to sell his brother-in-law's trinkets to distributors in New York City, and his encounter with an ifrit. There's a subplot about an idyllic small town in Wisconsin and how it stays prosperous and comfortable even while surrounding communities suffer. Gaiman has created a rich and thick and layered experience to read and absorb.

So why not a more glowing review, a higher rating? Well, as much as I appreciated it, I didn't connect with it very much. Shadow, our main character, is a cipher who neither speaks particularly often or has an especially rich inner life. And it makes sense, for who he's supposed to be: the only son of a peripatetic single mother who never had many friends growing up, who's spent a few years in the clink and loses the person closest to him right from the start. Why wouldn't he be withdrawn and closed off? Left alone in the world, why wouldn't he practice coin tricks instead of losing himself in his thoughts? But as much as I understand the characterization, it keeps the book at a distance, at least at first. As it moved along I got more swept up in it, but it still didn't quite click. It's actually a book I think would improve on re-read...now that I know what's coming and how it all plays out, I'd like to go back and start it from the beginning. Not right now. But eventually.

A little let down
By C. C. Pratt
It is a gorgeous book, no doubt about that - filled with an abundance of beautiful, imaginative projects and great instructions.

But (and you had to hear the 'but' coming), not everything shown on the front and back cover are included inside this book. One of the projects I was really looking forward to were the stumpwork pansies - I adore pansies! But, though I went cover to cover 3 times, alas, no pansies.

I think that if you are going to include a photo of something ON the book covers, it should be IN the book - otherwise you have MISLEAD the consumer. Had that been the case, I would have given this book 5 stars...as it was not, I can only reluctantly give it 3 stars.

3D Inspiration Leaps Right Off The Pages
By SLS
"Embroidered Flora & Fauna" is extraordinarily delicious and has reawakened my love of embroidery and stumpwork (and effectively led to several more Amazon purchases!). The subtitle "Three-Dimensional Textured Embroidery" simply does not do this book justice. Certainly the authors have captured here a fourth dimension - that of beauty.

Not only are the projects unusual but the book is organized in an ingenious method. Chapters are broken down by coloration, from the first chapter "Oyster White" to "Salmon" and finally "Grey, Black, & White". Feel like working in greens today? Just flip to the appropriate chapter and find a marvelous praying mantis.

My favorite project is in the "Brown" chapter; it is an amazing rendition of owls using washer discs, fringe, organza and even actual tree bark.

My other favorite project is a set of cut and whole figs. They can stand alone untethered and truely stand out from any other fig you have ever seen. These reside in the "Indigo" chapter.

The book begins with general instructions which are in sufficient detail and include ample photographs. There is a section on wire-edged applique that answered a lot of questions I had about this process. I was worried there might be a bit too much crochet involved in other items, but the instructions give me the confidence to try something new. A variety of media are used, and you have GOT to see the mesh food covers embellished with insects - there is no limit to what you can transform with a few glamorous stitches and techniques!

This is simply a lovely book for your favorite needleworker - you!
