A Modern Day Parable...........

A Beautiful Tale of faceing fears and finding Love at the other side of them. This type of story is really needed in our fast paced culture of instant gratification, where hiding and ignoring wounds can be the bedrock where shame and doubt are planted deep in the soul of a child. This shame and doubt usually grows into deep wounds in our inner being as adults that hold us back and keep us in bondage. Not for Ellam..... This is a heart building book that belongs in the library of anyone who believes in the Power of healing and the Power of Love. Journey with Ellam as she learns to Trust and live Free to be who she was created to be.... you may also discover the beauty of who you were meant to be. This is not a kids only book.....although I highly recommend it be a part of any child's library. The story of Ellam teaches that there is beauty in who we are no matter what our struggles. The emphasis is on the good in the middle of a trial and the story shows that we can and will be used for Great and Wonderful things if we believe, face our fears by walking through them and have Faith enough to Believe beyond "cultural norms", of labeling others when what works is honoring them. I Love that the author wrote this book to help his daughter who struggles with a condtion called Trichotillomania, compulsive pulling out of hair. In his attempt to write Ellams story to help others, he not only writes about Ellams journey to face her fear and walk through it and be brave, but he models that in the writing of this book. The heart behind the story is evident and relevent for such a time as this. I also loved the drawings, simple, colorful, allowing the imagination and soul to soar. I look forward to giving this book as gifts to many children and a few adults. I can't wait to see what else this author has up his sleeve. I also hope it helps many with Trichotillomania. It's a heart felt tale that will change your view and stop you from judging others. We all need to be encouraged to come out of our caves and be who we really are and be willing to be used for good in the lives of others. A Brave and Couragous tale that teaches that beautiful things can grow from adversity and trials. Read it...you won't be sorry!!

A must read family book

I bought this book for my granddaughter thinking it would help her with feelings of embarrassment over her recent hair loss. Turns out, it helped me as well. I started out feeling embarrassed that my granddaughter was not perfect. I of course thought she was from the day she was born. What I learned is that I need to be proud of her just the way she is and that is perfect, of course. A little less hair does not change that fact. She and I both shared a wonderful moment together while reading this book. What a self esteem builder it has been for her as she reads the book, over and over, and can relate the young dragon in the book.

Wonderful resource!

This book offers something truly remarkable to families coping with trichotillomania: a paradigm of acceptance. My daughter fights the urges that wax and wane with her trichotillomania, but she fights with an understanding that trich does not define her--and it may even expand her opportunities to bring love and compassion to a hurting world. This book reinforces both of those truths in spades. I'll be recommending it to every kid who comes to our support group here in Nashville!

The building of the Berlin Wall in 1961 shocked the world. Ever since, the image of this impenetrable barrier between East and West, imposed by communism, has been a central symbol of the Cold War.

Based on vast research in untapped archival, oral, and private sources, Burned Bridge reveals the hidden origins of the Iron Curtain, presenting it in a startling new light. Historian Edith Sheffer's unprecedented, in-depth account focuses on Burned Bridge-the intersection between two sister cities, Sonneberg and Neustadt bei Coburg, Germany's largest divided population outside Berlin. Sheffer demonstrates that as Soviet and American forces occupied each city after the Second World War, townspeople who historically had much in common quickly formed opposing interests and identities. The border walled off irreconcilable realities: the differences of freedom and captivity, rich and poor, peace and bloodshed, and past and present. Sheffer describes how smuggling, kidnapping, rape, and killing in the early postwar years led citizens to demand greater border control on both sides--long before East Germany fortified its 1,393 kilometer border with West Germany. It was in fact the American military that built the first barriers at Burned Bridge, which preceded East Germany's borderland crackdown by many years. Indeed, Sheffer shows that the physical border between East and West was not simply imposed by Cold War superpowers, but was in some part an improvised outgrowth of an anxious postwar society.

Ultimately, a wall of the mind shaped the wall on the ground. East and West Germans became part of, and helped perpetuate, the barriers that divided them. From the end of World War II through two decades of reunification, Sheffer traces divisions at Burned Bridge with sharp insight and compassion, presenting a stunning portrait of the Cold War on a human scale.

A Tale of Two German Cities & the Cold War...

Today when we think of the Cold War, we usually have the Berlin Wall in mind. Yet The issues between East & West exited before the wall was even put up in 1961.

This book is cut into 3 parts. The 1st part deal with the aftermath of the 2nd World War & the dividing of Germany into 4 zones of occupation by the allies with the issues that were already appearing before the formation of East & West Germany. Part 2 deals with how the East German government tried stop people stop from fleeing West in the 9 years prior to the Wall going up liking forming a Control Strip or borderline to separate the 2 Germanys. While the final part deal with the years the Wall was up & the aftermath of its coming down in 1989.

A great deal of this book focus on the relationship between two German cities- Sonneberg & Neustadt, which are separated by the Burned Bridge- an historical crossway which dates back to the middle ages. These sister cities which once shared common bonds found themselves being influenced by the Soviets & Americans respectfully as the border between East & West Germany runs right thought the Burned Bridge, setting the stage for what would happen when the Berlin Wall rises up.

Although it's been more than 20 years since the Wall came down, & today a McDonalds sit at the former borderland at Burned Bridge, frictions between the formerly close cities & residents still exist despite the fact that both cities' citizens are happy that Germany is finally unified. All in all, a good book that's well written & researched, & will appear to those who want to know more about the Cold War or the East-West Germany divide pre-Berlin Wall.

It is good to have many verses in green so to find what is applicable to ecology and the environment. The text is NRSV...and the extras are excellent. Highly recommend this for all of those who care about the environment from a biblical point of view. My only drawback is the small print.

About the Author
Ruskin Bond has been writing for over sixty years, and has now over 120 titles in printnovels, collections of stories, poetry, essays, anthologies and books for children. His first novel, The Room on the Roof, received the prestigious John Llewellyn Rhys award in 1957. He has also received the Padma Shri, and two awards from the Sahitya Akademione for his short stories and another for his writings for children. In 2012, the Delhi government gave him its Lifetime Achievement award. Born in 1934, Ruskin Bond grew up in Jamnagar, Shimla, New Delhi and Dehradun. Apart from three years in the UK, he has spent all his life in India, and now lives in Mussoorie with his adopted family. A shy person, Ruskin says he likes being a writer because When Im writing theres nobody watching me. Today, its hard to find a profession where youre not being watched!
