Rather disappointing.

I LOVED Donna Farhi's book "Yoga Mind, Body and Spirit" (which should be required reading for all yoga professionals) and was hoping for another book just like it -- only this time focusing on how to be a better yoga instructor. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed in this book. Since this book is called "Teaching Yoga", I thought that it would be about TEACHING YOGA, not 150 pages on ethics. Perhaps a better and more truthful title would have been "The Ethics of Teaching Yoga." If you are looking for a book on yoga and ethics, then this is the book for you. However, if you are looking for a book on the process or the act of teaching yoga or ways of improving yourself as a yoga instructor, this is absolutely not the right book for you.

Can ethics be taught ? and if so by someone so self absorbed?

Having seen so many favorable reviews on this book, one hesitates to come out with something so opposite to popular opinion. My husband and I listened to 20 minutes of the cd on a driving trip. We kept asking each other if a point had been made yet and what is she trying to say. Nothing. In reading the book, there is such a wounded hero here trying to prevent others from encountering the same misfortunes. If a yoga teacher, or for that matter any one in power, acts unethically, according to Socrates, did what they thought was the right thing at the time. We all know teachers, therapists, medical professionals who have acted unethically. Would reading a book change the outcome of unethical situations? No. This book is poorly written with so many pitiful autobiographic stories in it. Yoga Journal has succeeded in 2 pages what this book could not begin to cover. For most, yoga is a spiritual path and so ethics will reflect that. If you already have good ethics and common sense, and want to read something of value, try: Ben Benjamin, The Ethics of Touch, written for bodyworkers. The The Ethics of Touch: The Hands-on Practitioner's Guide to Creating a Professional, Safe and Enduring Practice

How To Be An Ethical Teacher

When I went through my own teacher training program, the subject of ethics were only briefly touched on. Although I consider myself an ethical person, I found that once I started teaching for real, there were times where I felt unsure of how to deal with my students or other various situations. How do I deal with a studio that is unethical? What do I do if a student acts in a manner that is inappropriate? How much should I charge? How do I handle a complaint from a student in a respectful manner? How do I set a healthy boundary?

"Teaching Yoga" by Donna Farhi attempts to answer these types of questions - and more. Farhi's book is thoughtful and well written. It is sprinkled throughout with verses from the Yoga Sutras as well as thought provoking "ethical inquires" that challenge the reader to explore their own feelings and ethics with various situations that other teachers have faced. Farhi covers every situation that you could think of: appropriate dress, foul language, when to send a student to another teacher, refunds, traning programs and more. I found myself recognizing situations that I have encountered and nodding in agreement with her solutions.

With the abundance of new yoga teachers and aspiring teachers hitting the market, there are bound to be many with questions and issues. Although the Yoga Alliance (an organization that has "standards" for teachers and schools) claims to "support the diversity and integrity of yoga", I have found this to be untrue. There are many teacher training programs and teachers that do not practice the yamas and the niyamas - and the Yoga Alliance does nothing at all to enforce these so called "codes of conduct". In my own experience, I have been disappointed and confused by some of the people that are out there as role models in the yoga community when they are far from ethical. It is up to us as individual teachers to explore our own hearts, to truly live our yoga and guide our students in a way that is kind, compassionate, honest and positive. This book certainly has been more helpful to me than any other resource.

Chapter 7 deals with the communication requirements for multimedia databases. A client accessing multimedia data over computer networks needs to identify a schedule for retrieving various media objects composing the database. The book identifies possible ways for generating a retrieval schedule. Chapter 8 ties together the techniques discussed in the previous chapters by providing a simple architecture of a distributed multimedia database management system.

A good social psychology of why we behave with compassion

During the highly publicized sentencing of Susan Smith, the Spartanburg, SC woman convicted of murdering her two young sons, the Herald-Journal reported, "The defense, which has maintained Smith is a tormented woman who has suffered a history of mental problems and abuse, is expected to capitalize on the officers' sympathy for Smith when she confessed. If they could show compassion, defense lawyers hope the jury will believe that Smith does not deserve to die." Meanwhile, the paper reported that in its closing argument, the state directed the jury to regard Smith's behavior as a manipulative tool: "[Solicitor] Pope said the prosecution's theory is that Smith 'pretends to commit these acts to gain sympathy."'
In our society, if we are worthy of sympathy it follows that we deserve special consideration and leniency. In this original, provocative study, Candace Clark gives intriguing evidence that people do not innately know when, for whom, and in what circumstances sympathy is appropriate. Rather, they learn elaborate, highly specific cultural rules-different rules for men than for women-that guide when to feel or display sympathy, when to claim it, and how to accept it. Clark approaches sympathy as an important form of social currency. We learn early in life that sympathy must be evenly exchanged; that our "sympathy margins"-our accounts of sympathy credits we can call on in time of need-are limited. In her often amusing narrative, Clark describes the do's and don'ts of "sympathy etiquette," cultural rules that people must follow to protect their sympathy margins.
Most disturbing is Clark's identification of a darker, less obvious side of sympathy-its function as a manipulative tool in everyday encounters. What exactly happens when someone gives another sympathy? Is the receiver pleased? Is the relationship solid? Or does the receiver feel belittled and hurt? When our sympathy exposes another's problems or inability to handle those problems, a show of sympathy can humiliate or diminish the receiver. Generally, Clark constructs a kind of social tour of sympathy, revealing that the emotional experience we modern Americans call sympathy has a history, a logic, and a life of its own.
This sociology of sympathy provides a look at the mostly tacit rules of behavior that govern our expressions of sympathy in American society. Sympathy is not an easy behavior to follow because of factors of class, race, gender and multicultural expectations. As work styles change and as the plight of the poor continues to burden our social conscience, Clark sees the possibility for some norms of sympathy to evolve and change. The volume provides a reasonable look at the social context in which we express sympathy and gage its fairness and appropriateness.

A must read for all couple therapists

This is a powerful and profound book. It is a guide into the world of couple work that is simple, clear, easy to read, and compelling.
Toni and her co-authors present the reader with a therapy concept and then show how to use it through written dialog from actual sessions. These sessions show Toni to be a compassionate, direct clinician who skillfully helps her clients into difficult or often hidden terrain. The book shows how this work leads to healing in each individual and in the couple and it clearly lays out the steps of how to achieve this. Reading this book has already benefited my work with couples. I highly recommend it.

Highly Recommended and Easy to Follow Read on Working with Couples

Well written and easy to follow manual on applying Internal Family Systems Therapy to working with couples. One of the things I liked best is that Toni, et. al. operationalize the steps in working with couples in an easy to follow manner. They guide you through the processes of joining with the couple, tracking the couple dance,and helping the couple get underneath their protective covers and connect with their needs and vulnerabilities which allows for improved communication and relational healing. I was very impressed with the authors' perspective on shame and how to understand its affects on the couple's relationship. They describe shame as a two part process with both a shamer and the shamed--but not just between partners but also happening within each partner! I've been working with couples for 20+ years and this book is one of the best I've read. Even if you are unfamiliar with the Internal Family Systems model of therapy, I suspect this book will still deepen your understanding on working with couples and it will provide you with the tools needed to guide you through the treatment process.

The book is extremely well written making it easy to connect theory with practice and many helpful, practical tips. A great guide for therapists working with couples or individuals working with relationship issues.

Hi! These are the notes from my English Language Arts class. Oh, who am I? Well, some people said I was the smartest kid in class. I wrote everything you need to ace ENGLISH, from the GREEK ROOTS to the FICTION WRITING, and only the really important stuff in between-you know, the stuff that’s usually on the test!
 
I tried to keep everything organized, so I almost always:
• Highlight vocabulary words in YELLOW
• Color in definitions in green highlighter
• Use BLUE PEN for important people, places, dates, and terms
• Doodle a pretty sweet Alice in Wonderland and whatnot to visually show the big ideas
 
If you’re not loving your textbook and you’re not so great at taking notes in class, this notebook will help. It hits all the major points. (But if your teacher spends a whole class talking about something that’s not covered, go ahead and write that down for yourself.)
 
Now that I’ve aced English, this notebook is YOURS. I’m done with it, so this notebook’s purpose in life is to help YOU learn and remember just what you need to ace YOUR English Language Arts class.

If you teach middle school, you will love this book.

This is an absolutely fantastic book which relates to middle schoolers visually and with the texts and examples given. I teach 7th grade and I plan on using this book in my classroom this school year. Just got the copy I preordered in the mail and I can't put it down. I think my students are going to really enjoy it as well.

Great Home School Resource...Even For Younger Grades

Going to use this as supplemental for home school. We will use it over several years getting deeper in to subjects as we go. Looks like a fab resource and will save me HOURS of time. I bought the whole set (World History, Ancient History, Science, Math and English). So did two of my fellow home school mom friends. We are all looking forward to using them as part of our curriculum.

I was happy to see this offered by Brain Quest for the older kids. I like the format, it's visually appealing, and it's thick but not overwhelming.

There are questions at the end of the sections, followed by answers on the other side of the page. Great for students who can handle being self guided.

I am really pleased at my initial look at of this series- For a review/ overview of basic info for the middle school student.

Now, if they would incorporate this idea into Highschool core courses that would be great!
