Not Nietzsche

This is a brilliantly written novel, that moves you along quickly. The characters are reasonably well described, although it is hard to understand how the protagonist could have been married 4 times - that idea is not developed well and only serves the somewhat cartoonish purposes of the author. The novel is pretentious, in the way of those long and entertaining college discussions and it is not clear what the point is, unless the point is the hoary existential premise that there is no point. So, as a self-important work of philosophy, it is sophomoric, but in a somewhat charming way. If you've enjoyed exploring the meaning of life with your peers, you'll enjoy this book. It's a good read, but don't take it too seriously - Don de Lillo writes well, but Nietzsche he ain't.

Occasionally brilliant, ultimately unsatisfying

I'm not sure what to think of Don DeLillo. White Noise, like Mao II, like Underworld, like End Zone, is a book bursting with ideas and observations about people, the world and modern life. And some of these observations will make you see things in a new way, or at least crystallize your thoughts so perfectly that you nod your head and say, "Yes, that's exactly what I think. Now why didn't I say it like that?" Well, because you're not Don DeLillo. So give the man credit, because that's something few people can do. At the same time White Noise shows up one of DeLillo's bigger flaws: he doesn't really create characters you care about, even a little bit. Indeed, in White Noise I'm sure he didn't want to. They're not real characters at all, only a group of signifiers and commenators who all speak with the same voice and even use the same expressions, whether they are ex-sportswriters, housewives, sulking teens, or nine-year-old girls. By page 300 this gets tiresome. Intellectual insights are more memorable when they are hung on interesting and engaging characters. So while I enjoyed White Noise and am impressed with the mind behind it, I found it ultimately unsatisfying.

My New Favorite Author

Somehow I missed Delillo along the way and discovered him through a review of his newest book "Zero K". Delillo writes the kind of prose that frequently makes you stop reading the passage so that you can return to savor it again. The book is laugh-out-loud funny (Check out the family trip yo the mall) but also profound and moving. I think I've found a new favorite author.

OUTDATED AND MISLEADING

THIS IS NOT A TRUE BOOK. This is a PHOTOCOPY of a TYPEWRITTEN United States Army Marksmanship manual of the late 1960's or early 1970's. The supposed copyright of 2002 is misleading at best, and at worst is an outright lie. The date the manual was published by the Army has been removed from the Foreword.

All the references in the text seem to be from the 1960's, even one from the 1950's. Also, the text states there are two "volumes" to the "manual", and only the first is present - the second volume is missing.

While a lot of the material is quite useful, there are better sources for pistol marksmanship material, and far more recent.

The publisher, Fredonia Books (Netherlands), has played this trick before for marksmanship books - make a photocopy of a manuscript that is decades old, removed the initial publishing date, and posted a phony "publishing" date, which is actually their own COPYRIGHT date. I wonder how the U.S. Army feels about that.

More than a tech-manual

I am the owner/chief-firearms instructor of a firearms-training company, and as such, am constantly searching for information that will my students and I improve in our tactics. After reading numerous books that referenced or took excerpts from this book, I decided to 'go to the source'. Be warned: this is NOT an easy read! This book reads like it was wrote - a 'tech-manual'. It's a little better than the tech-manuals written in the '50s, but it is still a tech-manual nonetheless. The minutae that the book references can be irksome at first, but once you accept that the author(s) believe in the relevancy of the details, the lights come on. Whether you want to concentrate solely on marksmanship or improve your combat-shooting techniques, this book is invaluable. Buy it, study it, apply it, and your shooting skills will improve.

I have bullseye shot for years. But now in my later years, I needed help. I did not know there was so much more to this than just aiming. I'm better than in my younger eyes. And this book puts the descipline together so well and helped me get over some major hurdles.

About the Author

Born in London, Len Deighton served in the RAF before graduating from the Royal College of Art (which recently elected him a Senior Fellow). While in New York City working as a magazine illustrator he began writing his first novel, The Ipcress File, which was published in 1962. He is now the author of more than thirty books of fiction and non-fiction. At present living in Europe, he has, over the years, lived with his family in ten different countries from Austria to Portugal.

BOMBER -Terror At Twenty Thousand Feet In The Dark Of NIght

A novel of the British bombing by night campaign by Bomber Command, Royal Air Force against the Germans in World War II. It was a truly desperate battle of the British crews in their 4-engine d Lancasters against German ground radar which directed both the famed '88' mm anti-aircraft artillery ("Arms Of Krupp") and the lash-up but excellent in-board intercept radar equipped aircraft [Heinz Schnauffer, #1 German Ace of the Night, nicknamed by British crews the "Ghost of St. Trond", scored all of his 121 air-to-air kills against British bombers] Omniscient point Of View is concentrated on the British crews, trying to live a somewhat normal existent during the day and flying long missions in the dark in an atmosphere of fear tempered by incredible sense of duty. Author LEN DEIGHTON is perhaps better known for his espionage novels (IPCRESS FILE, FUNERAL IN BERLIN, many many others) is very well-learned in this history {Deighton was a schoolboy when the Battle of Britain raged over London} of this incredibly suspenseful story woven together from many individual British lives. In my 60's and downsizing everything, most of library given to Goodwill, but the books that I KNOW I will read again I am purchasing newer copies. That's about the best recommendation that I can give this book. One of the best novels of the air war over Europe!

I have to confess, I first listened to this novel via audible. I enjoyed it so much that I bought a print copy because it is the kind of story that really needs more than one read. About a year later, I gave it a third read. This is not the Hollywood version of war. This is the real thing. The scope of the novel is both broad and narrow. Events are confined to a single 24 hour period, but dozens of characters are introduced, some more important than others. What I found of particular interest was the view from the ground inside a bombed city. You don't see that very often. Deighton is an excellent author and historian and he definitely knew the smallest details about life within a German town during the War. Some writers like to show off their research skills by dumping large amounts of information totally irrelevant to the plot. In this case, it never seems forced and adds to the story by giving it an authentic feel. I cannot recommend this novel enough, but be warned, it gives a graphic depiction of what happened in a town hit by explosives and incendiaries. The whole story builds towards a tragic, gut wrenching climax.

This book is not properly a work of fiction. Instead it covers many aspects of the controversial strategic bombing campaign waged by the Royal Air Force upon Nazi Germany. Len Deighton exhibits a wide ranging knowledge of the machinery, both mechanical and personal, used in the prosecution of that campaign. Particularly significantly, and exceptionally, Len extensively covers the experiences of the target town and the German forces opposing the bomber raid.

It's significant that all the action of the book takes place in one twenty four hour period as in a classic Greek tragedy!

I've had a copy of Bomber in paper back for some years. I was overjoyed to see it in Kindle and have re read it recently for probably the fourth time.

Astley's books always entertain

This is the 3rd book of Judy Astley's that I have listened to on Audible. I have enjoyed the books and the narrators have been very entertaining with attractive voices. The thing that bothers me about Judy Astley's books is that a lot of the main characters, women, seem to let things happen to them. This book is disappointing in that the main character seems to have a lax attitude about her marriage - A simple contented, but doing nothing about it sort of attitude and when something goes wrong she doesn't get outwardly angry or demand her pound of flesh. I guess the character is kind of emotionally passive which bugs me to no end. Saying all that it is still highly entertaining with dry humor and funny situations. Quirky British island life.
